2010 release, the third album from the German Electro-House duo. Ali and Basti are reveling in the artistic freedom that comes with their own independent label, as you can hear on Chocolate. Techno and House still form the foundations, yet Tiefschwarz push themselves beyond their previous limits. Chocolate is everything: subtle, bitter, and sweet, without milk and sugar, it is hand crafted from only the finest ingredients. The tracks work perfectly on the dancefloor, yet at the same time, the album as a whole is great to listen to outside of the club setting, due to its fantastic depth, enduring vocal tracks and subtle production methods.

There’s a profuse sweat dribbling down from “Find Me,” and an eye-narrowing tough side spans “Legends,” “12am,” and the sleaze-dipped “Stones.” The anthem-in-waiting “What You Want” will absolutely shimmer and sizzle across Balearic masses. It’s premium deep house and techno, and Tiefschwarz are never found wanting when it comes to serving the small hours. But in no way do they want that to be the whole story. Rather than knock out chunky floor nudges one after the other, there are fairground ride bulges and jolts (“Black Tick”), vocal numbers done with a little lampooning (faux lounge lizards Daniel Wilde, Seth Troxler, and Dave Aju draping themselves over chequered minimalism), and the out-whistling of Claude Von Stroke on the album’s closest call to chart-irritating novelty after prior flirtations with screwball grooves. “Bon Voyage” would be a tearjerker, were it not so unsteady. They’re not chancing their arm and seeing what sticks, but the brothers Schwarz, in union with Santé’s Philipp Maier, desensitize a bulked-up Berlin sound, encouraging the crowd to loosen up by using percussion and rhythms found falling down lift shafts and sometimes waiting for opportune moments of funky slapstick. Chocolate is of the dark variety, but a gooey center adds a pleasure principle to thwart Tiefschwarz’s third album from being strictly business.
