Daryl Hall and John Oates (often shortened to Hall & Oates) are an American duo who achieved their greatest fame in the late 1970s and early to mid-1980s. Both sing and are multi-instrumentalists. They specialized in a fusion of rock and roll and rhythm and blues styles, which they dubbed "rock and soul." Critics Stephen Thomas Erlewine and J. Scott McClintock write,[1] "at their best, [Hall & Oates'] songs were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions without being a slave to them by incorporating elements of new wave and hard rock." On some tours and dates, established soul and blues artists were known to perform in the duo's band. They are best known for their six #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Out of Touch", as well as many other songs which charted in the Top 40. They last reached the pop charts top 40 in 1990 and slowly faded from public view, though they did not formally break up. They have continued to record and tour with some success. In total, the act had 34 singles chart hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. Hall and Oates have seven RIAA platinum albums, along with six RIAA gold albums. A greatest hits compilation was released in 2001 by RCA/BMG. The BMG collection was expanded in 2004 and reissued the following year, after BMG merged with Sony Music Entertainment. In 2003, Daryl Hall and John Oates were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Холл и Оутс шесть раз возглавляли Billboard Hot 100 — с написанными ими самими песнями «Rich Girl», «Kiss on My List», «Private Eyes», «I Can’t Go for That», «Maneater» и «Out of Touch».

lastfm.ru
Следом в Топ 10 отправилась и переизданная «She’s Gone», а в марте 1977-го «Hall & Oats» дали залп по самой верхушке чартов композицией «Rich Girl» с поп-ориентированного альбома «Bigger Than Both Of Us». Две следующих работы, являвшиеся смесью соула, нью-вейва и синт-попа, также были широко востребованными и принесли группе немало хитов: «I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)», «Did It in a Minute», «Your Imagination», «One on One», «Family Man» (кавер Майка Олдфилда). Впервые за долгое время их работа имела хоть какой-то успех – песня «Do It for Love» заняла первую строчку в биллбордовских чартах в разделе «R&R’s Adult Contemporary». В 2004-м вышел диск «Our Kind Of Soul», составленный в основном из каверов.

1975 Daryl Hall & John Oates

Daryl Hall & John Oates is a 1975 album by Hall & Oates. This self titled album is sometimes labeled The Silver Album because of its metallic glam-rock style cover. In 2000 Buddah Records re-released the album with two bonus tracks ("What's Important to Me" and "Ice"). "Grounds For Separation", according to Daryl Hall, was going to be used in the Sylvester Stallone movie "Rocky." Frank Stallone, Sylvester's brother, was in a band with John Oates called Valentine and this connection got them a shot at an appearance on the soundtrack. The movie, however, was slow to get off the ground, and Hall and Oates withdrew the song. "Grounds For Separation" is also sampled by Kanye West in his song "Fight With The Best." "Gino (The Manager)" was about Tommy Mottola, their manager, who later became president of Sony Music. In 2009, Sony Music Custom Marketing Group released a triple pack of Hall & Oates albums. Along with this album, the pack included H2O and Ooh Yeah!.

1978 Livetime

Livetime is a live album by Hall & Oates. Daryl Hall is infamous for asking the crowd during the recording of this album, "Why didn't you like me as a teenager?" The concert was recorded in Hershey, Pennsylvania not far from Pottstown, Pennsylvania where Hall lived during his teenage years. Former Elton John Band members Caleb Quaye, Kenny Passarelli and Roger Pope were band musicians on this tour. Behind the scenes was lighting technician Mike Tiano, who would later become site manager for YesWorld, the official web site for the band Yes (Mike, along with the core band and production team, received a credit on the inner sleeve).

1978 Along The Red Ledge

Along the Red Ledge is a 1978 album by Hall & Oates. This album foreshadowed what was to come in a few years for the duo, as the duo shed previous producer Christopher Bond and went with a more polished sound with David Foster. The album is the first studio album where Hall & Oates used their road band in the studio (previously they would rely heavily on session musicians), a trend they would carry through their heyday of the early 1980s. It was one of the first albums ever produced by David Foster. "It's a Laugh" has made a resurgence in the duo's live performances over the last several years. George Harrison, of The Beatles, plays guitar on the track "The Last Time." Todd Rundgren also plays on this album, as does Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. Robert Fripp, of King Crimson, plays on the "Don't Blame It On Love."

1980 Voices

Voices is the title of the 1980 album released by Hall & Oates. The album slowly became a massive hit, spinning off four singles into the top 40 of the American pop charts: "How Does It Feel to Be Back" (#30 in fall, 1980), "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (#12 in winter, 1980), "Kiss on My List" (#1 for three weeks in spring, 1981), and "You Make My Dreams" (#5 in summer, 1981). Although "Everytime You Go Away" was not released as a single, it was covered by Paul Young in 1985 when it went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The album is seen as a revolution in the Hall & Oates sound, paving the way for future blockbusters like Private Eyes. It was the first album that Hall & Oates produced by themselves. The alternative cover art which was released in 1981. The original LP album cover was in black & white and had several variations with the duo in different poses and the half circle, sound-like waves were embossed & raised; a marketing technique commonly used in late '70's record sleeve packaging. It was subsequently replaced in 1981 with a color photograph of the duo, excluding the original pose of Hall "escaping" from his white trench coat-like jacket. The album was re-released in 2004 as a remastered version with a slightly different cover photo but no additional tracks. The Japanese re-release version had two extra tracks: a remixed version of Kiss On My List that had previously appeared on the album 12 Inch Collection 2 and a remix of Every Time You Go Away that was also available on the album The Ballads Collection - RCA 100th Anniversary Series.

1981 Private Eyes

Private Eyes is the 1981 hit album from blue-eyed soul duo Daryl Hall and John Oates. It stands not only as a definitive album for the duo, but as a notable album for the music of the decade combining pop, rock, R&B and soul genres. The album includes 2 Number one hits - the title track, "Private Eyes" and "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," as well as the Top Ten hit "Did It in a Minute." "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" also spent a week at the top of the R&B charts - a rare accomplishment for a "white" act. Though the act had hit the upper reaches of the Billboard charts with "She's Gone," "Sara Smile," and "Rich Girl", the group didn't return to major mainstream success until they released a cover version of The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" on its 1980 album, Voices. The heavy airplay eventually led to the duo's first Number One hit in four years, the Voices release, "Kiss on My List" in early 1981. As the liner notes to the 2004 Private Eyes reissue indicate, it was while Daryl Hall and John Oates were recording the follow-up album in their adopted hometown of New York City, during the spring of 1981, that "Kiss On My List" went to Number One in three trade publications. Determined to follow up on their success, the duo produced Private Eyes assisted by their co-producer Neil Kernon.

1982 H2O

H2O is the 1982 hit album from the duo Daryl Hall and John Oates. It featured three Top 10 U.S. singles, including "Maneater" which was the biggest hit of their career, spending four weeks at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The album title is a play on the chemical formula for water, where "H" is for Hall, and "O" is for Oates. H2O is certified double platinum by the RIAA with sales of over two million copies. In 2009, Sony Music Custom Marketing Group released a triple pack of Hall & Oates albums. Along with this album, the pack included Daryl Hall & John Oates and Ooh Yeah!. The original 1982 vinyl album was released with a front cover by American photographer Hiro, a close-up shot of water running down human skin. In 1990, when the album was reissued on compact disc, a profile portrait of Hall & Oates, originally on the back cover of the original vinyl album, was used as front cover. It has remained on all subsequent releases.
