BBC Review
In their early 70s heyday Lindisfarne packed the punters into ballrooms and halls from Wallsend down to Watford. A ticket to see Newcastle’s biggest musical export since The Animals was a guaranteed knees-up with a complimentary sore throat after singing along to terrace anthems such as Clear White Light, We Can Swing Together, Meet Me on the Corner and, inevitably, Fog on the Tyne. If, however, you can get past the jolly japes and revisit the five albums they recorded for the Charisma label, one is reminded that there was also some serious, and seriously good, songwriting to be found. Primarily (though not exclusively) this flowed from the pen of Alan Hull, a sharp-witted and often acidly satirical writer. In addition to targeting authority figures in the establishment, he composed some startling and telling portraits of ordinary human beings at their most vulnerable.Their 1970 debut, Nicely Out of Tune, is heavily indebted not only to The Band but a simmering infatuation with an all-purpose Americana. Intriguingly though, when their collective voices are raised in a chorus, their sometimes caustic harmonies have more in common with the traditional UK folk music landscape of the Copper Family than anything that came from Crosby, Stills and Nash. Whilst Fog on the Tyne (1971) extended their reach and consolidated their good-time brand, the ambitious but uneven Dingly Dell (1972) is somewhat tentative in its delivery. However, confidence is one commodity that cannot be said to be lacking on Lindisfarne Live (1973), performing to an ecstatic home crowd. In strictly commercial terms, it represents the last hurrah of a band by then dogged by internal strife. A revamped line-up has 1973’s Roll On, Ruby veering toward an opulent, soft rock that sounds surprisingly durable 38 years later. Sadly, a mid-90s ill-advised chart-topping fling with footballer Gazza, covering Fog on the Tyne, probably prevents Lindisfarne from being inducted into the English folk rock pantheon. A shame, because as this package (with bonus material and rare US mixes for completists) ably demonstrates, there was more to the band’s songbook than a few sing-along crowd-pleasers.

В 1971-1972 годах Lindisfarne была одной из популярнейших групп Великобритании: в первую десятку UK Singles Chart входили «Meet Me On The Corner» (#5) и «Lady Eleanor» (#3); второй альбом Fog on the Tyne три недели оставался на вершине списков UK Albums Chart. Take Off Your Head And Listen - как релиз Alan Hull & Bretheren. Radiator on the Rocket.

Meanwhile tracks for a sampler LP were recorded for Dave Wood's new Rubber Records label. This album Take Off Your Head And Listen would be released a little while later, with the tracks credited to Alan Hull & Bretheren (note the spelling!).

CD1

1970 Nicely Out Of Tune
Nicely Out of Tune is the debut album by Lindisfarne, released in late 1970. It was thus titled as the group considered themselves 'nicely out of tune' with other prevailing musical trends at the time. It charted more than a year after release, thanks to the huge success of their second album Fog on the Tyne, which topped the charts early in 1972. "Lady Eleanor" and "Clear White Light" were both released as singles. The former was reactivated once the group became successful, and gave them a No. 3 hit in 1972. "We Can Swing Together", a song written by Hull about an abortive police raid on a party, became one of their favourites on stage, featuring an extended medley of traditional folk tunes played on harmonica by Ray Jackson. A live version can be found on the group's 'Lindisfarne Live', recorded in 1971 and released in 1973, and as a bonus track on their third album, 'Dingly Dell'. The title of the seventh track, "Alan in the River With Flowers", is a parody of The Beatles' song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and was given its original title of "Float Me Down The River" on the American version. The "flatulette" was actually one of the band members blowing raspberries during the instrumental break in "Down".

1971 Fog On The Tyne
Fog On The Tyne was a 1971 album by English rock band Lindisfarne. Bob Johnston produced the album, which was recorded at Trident Studios in the summer of 1971. It was released on Charisma Records in England and Elektra Records in America. It gave the group their breakthrough in England, topping the album charts early in 1972. "Meet Me On The Corner", one of two songs written by bassist Rod Clements, reached No. 5 as a single. The title track became the band's signature tune, though it was not released as a single until 1974, by which time the group had disbanded and reformed with a new line-up. Simon Cowe made his debut as a writer, contributing the song "Uncle Sam". Both tracks on the B-side of "Meet Me On The Corner", "Scotch Mist" (an instrumental), and "No Time To Lose", appeared as bonus tracks when the album was reissued on CD. A heavily reworked version of the title track with vocals by footballer Paul Gascoigne was released in 1990 under the title Fog on the Tyne (Revisited), credited to Gazza and Lindisfarne. It reached number two in the UK singles chart.

* Ray Jackson - vocals, mandolin, harmonica

1972 Dingly Dell
Dingly Dell is a 1972 album by English rock band Lindisfarne. The album was produced by and mixed by Bob Johnston, who had also worked on the earlier #1 album Fog on the Tyne. However, the band were unhappy with the album, and remixed it themselves shortly before it was released. Dingly Dell was released in September 1972. It spent ten weeks in the UK album charts, entering at #5 and never going above this position. Two songs from the album were released as singles, "All Fall Down" and "Court in the Act".The former was a minor success, charting at #34 in the UK, while the latter failed to chart. On its original British release, it appeared in a matt pale sepia cardboard sleeve, blank apart from the name of the album and the band, with all the information contained on the inner sleeve and a sepia poster of the band inside. This was at their insistence, on the grounds that it was the music which mattered. The album was in general not as well received as previous Lindisfarne releases. The band's official website describes it as "a disappointment", although it praises the single "All Fall Down". Some contemporary reviews were relatively positive, including one from the Milwaukee Journal. Bruce Elder, writing for Allmusic in 2004, gave the album a rating of four stars. He described the band's playing as "spirited" and the songs as "enjoyable", and suggested that the rock press "savaged the album unfairly". Live Music Magazine considered that the album "had a very crisp sound, very upfront, and more of a mainstream hard rock sound", but felt that "this was not the move that the critics had wanted or expected of the band", and that "the songwriting didn't match the prior two albums".

Cut along the tour that preceded the breakup of the original group, this record features some fair performances by the band, though one surprise is the absence of "Lady Eleanor" and also the minimal presence of material off of Nicely Out Of Tune. 1973 Roll On, Ruby
amazon.co.uk / Review by C. S. Grant
Unlike the other review of this album on this site, I believe this to be a cracking album. Yes this is a diffferent band, whereas the two major forces of Lindisfarne, Hull and Jackson remain, a rockier outfit join the line-up. The original band were a terrific folk-rock band, whereas this may be more rock-folk, if such a definition can exist. There are plenty of accoustic guitars and mandolins remain, but with a heavier bass, which Tommy Duffy plays with some melodic meat, more powerful electric guitar sounds from Charlie Harcourt and fine rock-style drumming from Paul Nichols. Add the late-Kenny Craddock's keyboards and additional electric and accoustic guitars to the mix and the Mk 2 make a fine sound. The songs are not ponderous, but the slower songs have feeling, such as Hull's, "When The War Is Over" and a particular favourite, "Roll On River", sung really well by Ray Jackson. There are some orchestral arrangements added, which is on a grander scale than the original line-up's albums, but certainly adds to the flavour, such as "Roll On River". Duffy and Craddock are able to write catchy songs in this case almost as well as Alan Hull. This album is not dull, but an absolute joy. This was an over-looked album, because of the rockier sounds around at the time and that the Mk 1 band was so well loved. Lastly, I saw this Mk 2 Lindisfarne perform much of this album at the Rainbow and they didn't disappoint. Released in 2005 for the first time on CD. The 4 bonus tracks were recorded live at the Bob Harris show on 05.08.74 and had previously been released on the 1998 'Dealers Choice' compilation. Instead of these it would have been much better to add alternate versions from the U.S. 'Roll On, Ruby' album.
