Steamhammer was a blues-rock band from Worthing, England. The band was founded in 1968 by Martin Quittenton (guitar) and Kieran White (vocals, guitar, harmonica). The first stable lineup consisted of Quittenton, White, Martin Pugh (guitar), Steve Davy (bass), and Michael Rushton (drums). This version of the band acted as backing band for Freddie King on one of his tours of England. The band's first album, the eponymous Steamhammer (aka Reflection), was released in 1969. It included covers of "You'll Never Know" by B. B. King and "Twenty Four Hours" by Eddie Boyd as well as original songs by White, Quittenton, and Pugh. Session musicians Harold McNair (flute) and Pete Sears (piano) also played on the album. This album was not commercially successful, but the band became a popular live act, especially in West Germany. In the summer of 1969, Quittenton and Rushton left the band, and Steve Jolliffe (saxophone, flute) and Mick Bradley (drums) joined the band. This version of the band recorded the album Mk II, released in 1969. It consisted entirely of original songs, and the musical style had more jazz and progressive rock influences. Jolliffe left the band in 1970. The remaining band members recorded the album Mountains, which was released in 1970. This album included a cover of "Riding on the L & N" by Lionel Hampton and seven original songs. In 1971, White and Davy left the band, and Louis Cennamo (bass) joined the band. This lineup, along with session vocalist Garth Watt-Roy, recorded the album Speech, which was released in 1972. It consisted of three long, mostly instrumental songs. Bradley died of leukemia on February 8, 1972, aged 25. A memorial concert took place at London's Marquee Club on March 14, with appearances by fellow bands Atomic Rooster, Beggars Opera, If, and Gringo). Steamhammer carried on for a while with a new drummer, John Lingwood, and a lead singer, Ian Ellis (ex-Clouds). The new line-up debuted at London's Imperial College on May 3, followed by a European tour in May and UK tour in June with American vocalist/guitarist Bruce Michael Paine replacing Ellis. In June 1973, it was announced that they would now perform as Axis, playing their first gig under that name at the Marquee on June 15. Quittenton rejoined, but the band split towards the end of 1973. Pugh and Cennamo went on to play in Armageddon. After that band broke up, Cennamo joined Illusion and later worked with Jim McCarty in Stairway. White recorded a solo album, Open Door, which was released in 1975. White died in 1995 following an unsuccessful fight against cancer. Quittenton played guitar and co-wrote songs, including Maggie May and You Wear It Well on albums by Rod Stewart. Jolliffe joined Tangerine Dream in 1978 and played on the album Cyclone. Pugh appears to have been inactive in music after 1975, he did emerge to play guitar on sessions with American rock & roll band, 7th Order on their debut CD, The Lake of Memory - released in 2007
Armageddon was a hard rock band formed in 1974 - their self-titled debut, Armageddon, was recorded in England and released in the United States on A&M Records. The albums' original liner notes use the term "supergroup", as their personnel were drummer Bobby Caldwell (previously a member of Captain Beyond), singer Keith Relf (who had fronted the enormously influential Yardbirds as well as having been a co-founder of Renaissance), guitarist Martin Pugh (from Steamhammer), and bassist Louis Cennamo (also formerly of Renaissance and Steamhammer). Keith Relf had helped on the final Steamhammer LP, "Speech," in 1972. That band's dissolution came soon after the album release following the death of drummer Michael Bradley. The remaining Steamhammer alumni Pugh and Cennamo shared a flat and were asked by Keith Relf to move to Los Angeles with him early in 1974 with a view to forming a new band. They set out to recruit a drummer and happened across Bobby Caldwell (who had also been suggested to the band by Aynsley Dunbar) at The Rainbow in Hollywood, and began rehearsing together in late 1974/early 1975. Cennamo's old friend, Peter Frampton, was also now in Los Angeles and helped them to make contact with his management and record label. While Armageddon was managed initially by Dee Anthony (the aforementioned Frampton, Humble Pie, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer) and later Jerry Weintraub (Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan), the fact that the band played only 2 live shows in their existence (in July 1975 at the Starwood in Hollywood, CA) may have impacted their exposure level, record sales and potential for success.
Первоначальный состав: Kieran White - vocal/guitar/harmonica; Martin Pugh - guitar; Michael Quittenton - guitar; Steve Davy - bass; Michael Rushton - drums. (Peat Sears). "Steamhammer" a. k. a. Стоит выделить их первый ударный боевик-сингл Junior's Wailing (позже прославленный группой Status Quo), необычно звучащие номера с зажигательной соло-гитарой She is the Fire и You'll Never Know и, особенно, акустическую пьесу On Your Road. А из второй - Supposed to Be Free и Passing Through. Параллельно с выходом пластинки появился и второй сингл - Autumn Song/Blues for Passing People. Жемчужинами студийной части альбома стали композиции Уайта Levinia и Leader of the Ring. Riding on the L&N/Hold That Train (Garth Watt-Roy ex-Greatest Show On Earth, Fuzzy Duck) Steamhammer

1969 Mk II
steamhammer.com Steamhammer’s second album produced in 1969, highlights the melodic and exciting “Supposed To Be Free,” which speaks for itself, being sandwiched between “Santana” and “Chicago” on CBS’s “Fill Your Head With Rock” album. en.wikipedia.org Mk II was the second album of the British blues-rock band Steamhammer. Not selling as many records as they had hoped, Steamhammer nevertheless became a top European open-air attraction, mainly due to their excellent live performance. For over two hours each night they would provide instrumental improvisations, exemplarised by the guitar work of Martin Pugh and the harmonica of Kieran White. In summer 1969, Martin Quittenton left the band, followed by drummer Michael Rushton. They were replaced by Steve Jolliffe (saxophone, flute) and Mick Bradley (drums). Jollife's feel for precise arrangements and jazz influences especially inspired the recording of this second Mk II album. Going beyond the boundaries of traditional blues forms, the band members applied their musical creativity and imagination without the need for technical

1970 Mountains
steamhammer.com Steamhammer’s third album, features live recordings at the Lyceum in London, spotlighting the band’s signature ‘body’ music, with “Riding On the L&N” and “Walking Down the Road”, proving the quote: “Steamhammer is one of those rare groups who sound better live than on record.” The centerpiece of this album is a 14-minute live treatment of “Riding On the L&N/Hold That Train”. en.wikipedia.org Mountains was the third album of the British blues-rock band Steamhammer. In summer 1970, Steamhammer recorded this album as a quartet, Kieran White (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Martin Pugh (guitar), Steve Davy (bass) and Mick Bradley (drums). These four musicians worked together as a team to provide a selection of high-quality white urban blues. The live track, "Riding On The L&N", is one of the highlights of the Mountains album, which contains blues numbers combined with rock music. With the release of this album, Steamhammer began to be more noticed by the rock world.

1975 Armageddon
steamhammer.com Armageddon, recorded in England and brought back to the States, was one of the most inspired collaborations ever undertaken, bringing together four extremely talented musicians, three of which hailed from Steamhammer: Martin Pugh, Keith Relf, and Louis Cennamo, and now featuring Bobby Caldwell on drums. Liner notes describe the band’s music as, “breathtaking, intense, and highly sophisticated.” en.wikipedia.org Armageddon was the only album released by British/American hard rock group Armageddon in 1975. It features Keith Relf of Yardbirds and Renaissance fame, Martin Pugh, lead guitarist on Rod Stewart's "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down" and with Steamhammer, US-American Bobby Caldwell who was the drummer of Captain Beyond and with Johnny Winter, and Louis Cennamo who was the bass player for Renaissance and Steamhammer. Armageddon sought to create a style unlike any other in rock. Armageddon was the last band to feature ex-Yardbird Keith Relf. The former lead singer and harmonica player of the band that launched Clapton, Beck and Page, Relf had abandoned his blues-guitar band roots when he founded Renaissance in the late 1960s. Relf left Renaissance after two albums (actually half way through the second album) due to frustrations with the music business and being tired of touring. However, when he created Armageddon, he became involved with one of the best guitar rock albums of the 70's. After the dissolution of Steamhammer, Relf, and ex-Steamhammer members, Martin Pugh (guitar) and Louis Cennamo (bass) came to L.A. and hooked up with ex-Captain Beyond and Johnny Winter drummer Bobby Caldwell to form Armageddon. Although the group's self-titled album was well-received by critics and fans, the band did not tour extensively, and, consequently, sales suffered. This proved to be the last stand for Relf and Armageddon. Relf returned to England due to poor health shortly after the album was released. Relf's health and reported drug use among some band members led to Armageddon failing to release any more material. Relf died shortly after returning to England, when he was electrocuted while playing guitar. He did record one more song "All the Falling Angels" that is included on an album by Illusion called Echanted Caress. (Illusion was the name the original members of Renaissance chose when they reunited. This was because Anne Haslam and her crew had become Renaissance). According to the CD booklet, Frampton recommended Armageddon to A&M Records, and because he was their top selling artist at the time, they listened to him.
