All 7 Mini LP Card Repro Sleeves follow their US releases - 1 to 6 has blue Fantasy labels on each CD (with Full Radial Stereo wording) while 7 has the tan coloured Fantasy label. "Pendulum" is a gatefold as per the original issue - and each card repro also has an inner sleeve too. Unfortunately the inner merely pictures the album front, which is hardly imaginative and a bit disappointing. The booklet gathers up ALL SIX INLAYS of the 2008 remasters and runs them into one beautiful and chunky read. It's a genuine treat to look at (apart from the occasional typo error). But a lazy downer, however, is that there are no extra notes for the "Mardi Gras" addition.

The clincher for fans of course is the bonus set of promo videos, and here I was surprised at how good technically the quality of image is compared to a lot of vids from that era. Most of the vids are reasonably straightforward clips of the band miming to the track, and only differ in the degree which some production editor has seen fit to mess with the special effects. The best is Long Gone, shot straight in a camped studio, and left alone, and then by degrees we end up with Restless which literally ends up as a sequence of large pixels moving around the screen! So, nice to get these out officially for the first time, a bit naughty to make fans have to buy an expensive box set just to get them; a separate mid-priced DVD would have been a nice option.

Boxed-up classics from Purple singer’s creditable band. It’s easy to forget just how good the original Gillan like-up were, but between 1979 and ’82 bassist John McCoy, guitarist Bernie Tormé, drummer Mick Underwood and newly ex-Purple Ian were on occasions excellent. And here’s a welcome jog of the memory. This collection brings together the band’s 11 singles during that period, beginning with the riff-encrusted Vengeance and going up to the more thoughtful Long Gone. Each of these singles come in a CD-sized replica of the original seven inch sleeve, and to bathe again in the rock’n’roll strut of Trouble, the melodic thrust of Mutually Assured Destruction and the hilariously sinful No Laughing In Heaven is a real joy.
For a time, Gillan really were among the best hard rockers around.

This 5-CD set is not an album as such, nor is it a compilation. Instead it is a neat box set comprising the three CBS-era albums Mott The Hoople released, together with the two albums they released following Ian Hunter's departure. All five are as per the most recent reissues (complete with bonus tracks), each in an individual slip-case but minus any sleeve notes. The five themselves are then presented in a slim slip-case which fits neatly on any CD shelf. All The Young Dudes was, of course, their breakthrough album and includes the hit of the same name. The remastering brings more power and bite to the tracks that was somehow stifled on the original vinyl. Mott is the highlight of their career, and a rock classic - a must for anybody's collection. The Hoople from 1974 is more keyboard orientated and maybe suffers in comparison from the "follow that, then" syndrome. It's still a good album, tho'. Drive On, recorded after the departure of Ian Hunter suffers from the lack of really good songs. If it was a debut album from a new band it would be very good, but from a well-established band it should perhaps have been better. Shouting And Pointing is better, but singer Nigel Benjamin was to leave soon afterwards which resulted in the demise of a fine band. Inclusion of the two post-Hunter albums is stretching things somewhat, as it was a different band (as hinted at by the name change to MOTT). There's nothing here for the fan who already has the individual albums, but for the fan wishing to investigate Mott The Hoople beyond the compilations this is worthy of consideration.

Argent are an English rock band founded in 1968 by keyboardist Rod Argent, formerly of The Zombies. The first three demos from Argent, recorded in the autumn of 1968 featured Mac MacLeod on bass guitar. The other original members were bassist Jim Rodford (Rod Argent's cousin and formerly with the Mike Cotton Sound), drummer Robert Henrit and guitarist/keyboardist Russ Ballard (both formerly with The Roulettes and Unit 4 + 2). Lead vocal duties were shared between Ballard and Argent. Rod Argent, Chris White (former Zombies bassist) and Russ Ballard were the group's songwriters. Some of Ballard's compositions became hits when they were covered by other artists, including Kiss, Petra, Rainbow, Hello and Santana.When Ballard left in 1974, he was replaced by guitarist/vocalist John Verity and guitarist John Grimaldi and there followed a period of intense recording and touring until the band decided to come off the road late in 1976. Rodford, Henrit and Verity briefly continued together under the name Phoenix before going their separate ways, with first Rodford and then Henrit becoming members of The Kinks.

Although they are intricately entwined into the DNA of that sub-genre of progressive music known as the Canterbury scene, there’s nevertheless always been something of the “bridesmaid but never the bride” syndrome about Caravan. Quite why this should be is slightly baffling given that their sound has always been on the light and accessible end of the progressive rock spectrum. Their straightforward songs and bright, unfussy noodling was the sunshine to the oft-dark complexities of their close Canterbury cousins, Soft Machine. Whereas the Softs veered far from their shared pop roots, ploughing an acerbic, often ground-breaking furrow into improvisation, jazz-rock fusion and beyond, Caravan pretty much bumbled along on their old straight track in a benign, slightly sleepy but agreeable manner. This handsomely appointed four-CD box set, whilst being skimpy on unreleased or rare material (only boasting a couple of previously-unreleased extras), offers a pleasantly winding stroll through their classic period, from which 1971’s In The Land of Grey and Pink remains their most enduring work. All but one of its original studio tracks are presented here; filled with flutes, fuzz-pedalled organ and dreamy vocals about girls, freedom, and finding yourself, these agreeable, sun-dappled pastoral tunes are as English as Elgar. Gracefully structured long-form suites were essential ingredients in the Caravan brew, but whilst Nine Feet Underground (1971), Nothing At All (1972) Memory Lain (1973) and several other notable epics all clocked up the minutes, these were genteel, subtle undertakings rather than vulgar exhibitions of technique. Though they recruited a dedicated following it was never wide or deep enough to deliver them real commercial success. It always seemed that Caravan were only ever one album away cracking the market, but much to the frustration of the band and its supporters that happy event always eluded them. At a time when bands like ELP seemed hell-bent on world domination via bombastic rock symphonics, Caravan generally opted for a kinder, whimsical non-competitive mode of expression when soloing, and perhaps it was precisely the lack of extrovert showmanship that prevented them from attracting wider attention. Yet, as this set demonstrates, given that they sound a good deal less-arch and cliché-free than many of their more illustrious and fêted contemporaries, this was probably a good thing. A worthy introduction to a likeable but often unfairly neglected English institution.

Any KISS fan knows that there is no shortage of KISS material on the market. There have already been several greatest hits packages geared toward the band’s fans over the past several years. What sets IKONS apart from the previous attempts to bottle the magic of KISS, is that Ace Frehley and Peter Criss share equal billing with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. In my opinion, this is truly a strong point of this compilation. All politicking aside, the greatest part about this set is that once you pop this set into your stereo and hit play, you will be taken on a wild ride with a fantastic sampling of the entire KISS library that is every bit as good today as the first time you heard it!
The packaging for IKONS is definitely as eye catching as the members themselves. The outside sleeve is jet-black and features the iconic KISS logo and the member “Ikons” beautifully rendered in all their metallic glory. Inside the package is a very cool 24-page booklet filled with classic KISS photos and a brief yet wonderfully written history of the band. This set truly is one of the best on the market in regards to price and content. There is no doubt that you get plenty of bang for your buck with IKONS. In an era where the youth of the nation is being exposed to “classic rock n’ roll” via Guitar Hero and Rock Band, this compilation is timely and serves as a terrific jumping off point for fans just discovering the rich history of the band.

As the Grateful Dead story continues with this 12-disc sequel to the equally outsized The Golden Road (1965-1973), the band leaves the relative comfort of the '60s (hey, it suited them just fine) and heads into a period that will provide them with greater rewards as a performing outfit, and greater challenges as a studio entity. The post-'60s Dead floundered nearly as often as they soared--at times haphazardly trying to play the game as defined by more disciplined bands of the '70s and '80s, at other times succeeding almost in spite of themselves. This was a time when they allied themselves with such unlikely coconspirators as hit-minded mogul Clive Davis (after their own label fell by the way) and Fleetwood Mac producer Keith Olsen. They consciously reached for commercial gold and fell short, then found it on their own terms--by recording the 1987 studio album In the Dark in a vacant auditorium.
As with the first Rhino box, Beyond Description (1973-1989) gets the kind of state-of-the-art remastering one would expect from the sonically ambitious bunch. Again, each disc is fleshed out with smartly selected outtakes, demos, and live recordings. Two thoroughly annotated and strikingly illustrated booklets pull the package together. Considering the amount of posthumous product released since Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead's demise in 1995, perhaps a better name for the band would be the Living Dead. However, there is no denying the fact that the Dead's music--at various times thrilling, adventurous, simple, futuristic, old-fashioned, ethereal, abominable, ridiculous, and sublime--bears this kind of deep exploration. Rhino's 12-disc bonanza is the definitive look at the Dead's formative years, a fantastically creative nine-year period for Warner Bros. In 1965, they were a bunch of ex-folk and bluegrass musicians who were looking to jump on the rock bandwagon driven by the Beatles. This is where the long, strange trip began for the Grateful Dead. Between 1965 and 1973, the band evolved from an obscure Bay Area electric blues outfit into the world’s greatest jam band. In 1965, a Palo Alto, California cover band called The Warlocks - Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann - became known as the Grateful Dead. They soon situated in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and built a spirited following through a series of free concerts, becoming one of the top draws around town. In 1967 the Dead added a second drummer, Mickey Hart, and began committing their free-form musical vision to tape. The Grateful Dead was a studio effort. Anthem Of The Sun took live tracks further via the studio, and Aoxomoxoa reached for the live experience in the studio.
