Kevin Godley / Lol Creme (Кевин Годли и Лол Крим) - "артистическая" составляющая группы 10сс (занимались звуковыми, поэтическими и концептуальными экспериментами). Собственно группа Godley & Creme была создана после выхода альбма 10сс How Dare You! Тем не менее альбом 1981 года Under My Thumb попал в британскую топ-десятку (British Top Ten).

Allmusic / Biography by Michael Sutton
British vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Kevin Godley and Lol Crème have one of the most eclectic resumés in rock & roll. Godley and Crème were session musicians when they joined 10cc in 1970. Originally called Hotlegs, 10cc were an art pop group that frequently appeared on the U.K. charts in the early '70s, eventually hitting number two in the U.S. with "I'm Not in Love." The two departed from 10cc a year later so they could experiment with the Gizmo, a gadget that enabled the guitar to create sounds with symphonic textures. The device, which they had invented, became the inspiration for Godley & Crème's 1977 debut triple-LP Consequences. A concept album about mankind battling a vengeful Mother Nature, Consequences was ripped to shreds and ridiculed by critics for its pretentiousness and excessive length. The bad press and poor sales generated by Consequences nearly destroyed the duo's career. However, in 1981, Godley & Crème landed on the British Top Ten with "Under My Thumb." But Godley & Crème achieved the most commercial success and critical acclaim in the '80s as video pioneers. The pair directed MTV clips for the Police, Duran Duran, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood that stretched the boundaries of music video and proved that the form was capable of producing art. In 1985, Godley & Crème had their only American smash with "Cry." Not surprisingly, it had an eye-popping video with groundbreaking special effects that showed people's faces morphing into one another. Godley & Crème were unable to climb the heights of "Cry" again and released Goodbye Blue Sky in 1988 before leaving music behind for video production. Crème joined the Art of Noise in the late '90s.

1977 Consequences 2CD Box Set
Original Release: Mercury UK 3LP Set 9199 062/3/4

Allmusic / Review by Donald A. Guarisco
This album, the solo debut of former 10cc members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, is generally considered to be one of the most notorious examples of '70s music-business excess. Consequences began its life as a single designed to show off the "gizmo," a musical device created by Godley & Creme that allowed an electric guitar to create symphonic-sounding textures when attached to its neck. Somewhere along the line, this single blew up into a triple-disc concept album about nature taking its revenge on mankind through hurricanes, floods, and the like. The first disc is almost entirely instrumental, using the "gizmo" to create all sorts of different textures as a hurricane dubbed "Honolulu Lulu" trashes Hawaii and heads for the United States. This stuff is a feat of clever engineering (there is a particularly funny part where an obnoxious rock band at an outdoor festival is swept away by a flood), but the musical content is lacking in hooks or melodies and thus fails to involve the listener. Consequences moves into its story line on the second disc, dividing its time between songs from Godley & Creme and spoken word comedy sketches written and performed by legendary British comedian Peter Cook that push the plot forward. The story focuses on a married couple working out the details of their divorce with their respective lawyers as the storms and earthquakes kick in. Their only hope is the downstairs neighbor, an eccentric composer named Blint who is working on a concerto that may be able to stop nature's revenge. The songs are mainly cutesy fluff: although they have clever arrangements and lush vocal harmonies, they lack the kind of memorable melodies that would bring the album's many concepts to life. The one song that stands apart from the dross is "Five O'Clock in the Morning," a clever and subtle portrait of suburban malaise that became a minor European hit. The comedy bits have some clever moments of wordplay, but weigh the album down because they go on too long and distract from the music. When the climactic "Blint's Tune" finally arrives, it is merely a meandering and overlong piano-led instrumental. Simply put, Consequences is a disaster: its humor is labored, its musical content is dull, and the mind-numbing length of the album proved that neither Godley nor Creme knew when to quit. The duo later proved they were capable of better and more focused satirical pop on albums like Freeze Frame, but they are lucky this creative train wreck didn't end their career before it could start.

Allmusic / Review by Mark Allan
Together, these two multi-instrumentalist studio freaks were the British Frank Zappa. Overwhelmed by their own cleverness, they often wasted brilliant production and gorgeous vocal harmonies on trite material. The title of this album and a song called "Sandwiches of You" offer a hint of the problem. It's impossible to feel any emotional attachment to the material because of a sense that everything these guys do is tongue in cheek. This is a thoroughly forgettable outing by two chaps capable of much more.

Allmusic / Review by Mark Allan
It's impossible to mistake this for a 1981 J. Geils Band release of the same name. This album gets the nod over some other Godley and Creme ones because sometimes they actually stay with a tune to the end instead of sailing off on a Frank Zappa-like tangent. That might be because the part-time presence of Paul McCartney and Phil Manzanera keeps their hosts grounded. "An Englishman in New York" sounds remarkably like Queen in spots and is the strongest track on the album, although its smugness wears thin after awhile.

Allmusic / Review by Mark Allan
Prone to pretension, these two English Frank Zappas revel in outright silliness on much of this album, which was also released as Snack Attack. The mix puts their voices higher than usual, highlighting some truly bent tales of munchy madness, desert skullduggery, and JFK assassins. For contrast, there's the gorgeous "Wedding Bells," a rare AM hit for the former 10cc mates. Throughout all of this, you get the nagging feeling this pair was capable of so much more.

1983 Birds Of Prey
Original Release: Polydor UK POLD 5070 (2383 653)

Allmusic / Review by Dave Thompson
The least successful inclusion in the Godley & Creme catalog, Birds of Prey finds the duo stripping back the crazier idiosyncrasies that made its earlier albums so intriguing, and working more in the realm of melody and, dare one say it, easy listening. Lyrically they remain as offbeat as ever, and an evening with the Birds of Prey lyric sheet will send you scrabbling to hear the music. Bad move. "Save Me a Mountain," the album's almost-hit single, is a saccharin lament that might be directly descended from 10cc's "Brand New Day" and "Don't Hang Up," but lacks both the melodic and the emotional punch that made those earlier ballads work so well, while "Samson," "My Body the Car," and "Madame Guillotine" simply sound as though they were recorded the moment the ideas first stumbled into view, as opposed to waiting around to make sure the songs were even worth pursuing. So a major disappointment from a duo that was traditionally so reliable and, if you do buy the album today, it'll be for the bonus tracks - no, not the dance mix of "Samson," but for the sheer madness of "Welcome to Breakfast Television," a topical B-side at the time of its release, and a self-fulfilling prophecy that could not have been proved more accurate.

1985 The History Mix Vol. 1
Original Release: Polydor POLH 22 (825 679-1)

Allmusic / Review by Dave Thompson
A decade after Kevin Godley and Lol Creme walked out on 10cc and took half of that band's magic with them, the pair convened a reunion of sorts with The History Mix, Vol. 1, the ultimate ideal of all that the then-infant industry of remixing had to offer. The utterly gorgeous (and surprisingly successful) "Cry" notwithstanding, the basic premise of the album was to assemble a batch of the duo's past triumphs - 11 in all, with only four pre- or postdating the 10cc era - and then recycle them into five separate cuts that fall somewhere between Frank Zappa and a deranged interpretation of an early Residents album. All of which makes for a collection that is alternately infuriating (ten minutes of the hook line from "Business Is Business" spliced with the "humdrum" intro from "The Dean and I"), intriguing (the combination of key elements from "How Dare You" and "Neanderthal Man"), and plain compulsive (the gentle drift from "I'm Not in Love"'s whispered "big boys don't cry" into "Cry" itself is a masterpiece in its own right). With producer Trevor Horn at the helm, the overall sound of the album is very much a child of its age - however, the only moment that has truly dated is the insertion of a reference to Hill Street Blues into a fragmented "Rubber Bullets." Nevertheless, it's an album that is best recommended only to fans who actually know the original songs, and who'll appreciate the fresh landscapes into which they've been spliced - one reason, presumably, for the CD reissue of the album adding in a handful of other, more conventional Godley & Creme concoctions. They, at least, give the impression of a commercially valid experience. In its natural state, it's simply the sound of invigorating sonic madness.

1988 Goodbye Blue Sky
Original Release: Polydor UK POLH 40 (835 348-1)

Allmusic / Review by Mark Allan
In their final major-label release before heading for a video-making career, these two veteran English music-makers tackle environmental degradation and nuclear annihilation. After earlier releases full of detached sarcasm and sardonic wit, it's refreshing to hear the pair actually care about something, although they sometimes hector. Musically, the songs are linked by the use of harmonicas on every track. This is one of their stronger albums because of thematic consistency and typically terrific production, including the usual gorgeous, multi-tracked harmonies. In spite of the gloomy subject matter, the album-closing "Desperate Times" ends on an optimistic note.
