The musical side of Anthology – originally represented by three albums of new, unheard and rare material – also has an important new element. Volume 4 includes new mixes of The Beatles’ Anthology-associated hit singles. The GRAMMY-winning Free As A Bird and Real Love have been given new life by their original producer, Jeff Lynne, using de-mixed John Lennon vocals. Both singles’ new mixes are placed alongside the band’s most recent UK No. 1 hit single, 2023’s GRAMMY-winning Now And Then, the last Beatles song. All three singles were created from rudimentary home demos John recorded in the 1970s, later completed with vocal and instrumental parts recorded by Paul, George and Ringo.

Between 1970 and 1973, Elton John had moved from strength to strength, becoming not just one of the most commercially dominant figures in rock music but also one of the most creatively interesting pop stars around. Pairing a presence that could only be called "flamboyant" with music that—even at its most infectious and upbeat—was still suffused with compositional complexity and lyrical melancholy, the five records he made during this era are not only as good as any five-album run from any other artist, but they also made him seem nearly bulletproof. 1974's Caribou —coming hot on the heels of the epic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road—punctured that aura of invincibility. Although it yielded a couple of hits, the album felt weary and uninspired, and it wouldn't have been unimaginable for Elton John's career to have remained on a downward creative and commercial trajectory from there. He had other ideas.
