Here's a slightly abbreviated (honest!) list of Salsoul compilations released during 2004 and 2005. Collect and swap them all (or don't): Philly Soul Flavas, Crossover Flavas, Latin Funk Flavas, the two-volume Disco-Funk Flavas, Disco Divas and Soulful Sista Flavas, Mello Vibes and Funky Flavas, The Salsoul Acapellas, Salsoul 30th, the two-volume Definitive 12" Masters, Stuart Patterson's Sleazy Beats and Dirty Vibes, Marshall Jefferson's My Salsoul, Danny Krivit's My Salsoul, Grandmaster Flash's Mixing Bullets and Firing Joints -- not to mention artist anthologies from Inner Life, Loleatta Holloway, First Choice, the Salsoul Orchestra, and Candido, as well as remix compilations dedicated to the work of Walter Gibbons and Larry Levan. That's a lot of Salsoul. In fact, that's a lot of overlapping Salsoul. And here's some more (of the same) Salsoul, mixed across two discs by London-based Queer Nation DJ Luke Howard. Though he did some re-edit work and mixed the tracks using Ableton Live, neither a newcomer nor an everyday Salsoul freak will notice much difference between the presentation of this set and any other. As meticulous as Howard's efforts must've been, the set streams along naturally and easily, with little evidence of unnecessary flash. It's one of many fine entry points and contains liner notes that place Salsoul's legacy within the context of London's gay club scene. Highlights: Logg's "I Know You Will," First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder," Inner Life's "Moment of My Life," Bunny Sigler's "By the Way You Dance," Sharon Bailey's "Cosmic Dust," Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up."
