The world is on edge.

Since the release of Phantasiai in 2021, life has changed and keeps changing, for me personally and throughout the rest of the world: the disorienting emergence from pandemic life, the ongoing genocides and conflicts continuing and increasing globally, the regrowth of widespread fascism, ecological destruction. Feeling different in my own skin, I knew that my next musical chapter would reflect and give voice to these mammoth-sized traumas, seeming ever more urgent, working their way in, both in concept and composition. This album asks the question: is an alternative to these ways of operating possible on a mass level, or are they an inescapable part of the human condition?

After four solo albums, it was time to wake up from the dream-like comfort zone of my more ambient side and challenge myself – perhaps not forever or in the same way, we’ll see – to create something bigger, more epic and rhythmic with this latest effort, Calls From A Seething Edge. Unlike the blissful blur of my earlier work, every note of this album is intentional, articulate, exposed. While still drawing from the darkest cinematic moments of previous albums, Calls introduces the addition of folk and industrial elements drawing from a wider cultural range – I learned some basic drum synth programming – and the inclusion of several guest musicians, to whom I’m forever grateful for their crucial contributions: Gregory C. Hagan, my beloved partner (ex-Common Eider, King Eider, -Thomas Carnacki) whose viola solos provide a backbone to and bookend the album, and whose inspiration and feedback throughout the writing and recording process has been invaluable; Derrick Vella, virtuosic mastermind/guitarist of Tomb Mold and Dream Unending on acoustic guitar; longtime collaborators and friends Sam Foster (ex-Saros, -Weakling) on hand percussion and additional drum sampling, and Ryan Honaker (Ionophore, Betterthief) on violin; Vincent van Veen (Kali Ra) on electric cello and upright bass; Ed Lloyd Grey on acoustic upright bass. As I was working through all the synth and horn layers, drum tracks, choirs and string quartets, I realized it was more than I could manage myself from a production standpoint, so I enlisted the help of Sammy Fielding (Ancient Owl Audio) to mix what was becoming a beast of an album. It took a leap of faith for me to hand over the mixing to someone else, but it was the right move for this record and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The photography gracing the front and back cover is the handiwork of psychoanalyst, artist and poet Terrance McLarnan, also a good friend and work colleague.

Embrace the Void, as the seething edge of existence draws us ever closer to it: we’ve learned to breathe without breath, to live where there is no life.
