This 5-CD set is not an album as such, nor is it a compilation. Instead it is a neat box set comprising the three CBS-era albums Mott The Hoople released, together with the two albums they released following Ian Hunter's departure. All five are as per the most recent reissues (complete with bonus tracks), each in an individual slip-case but minus any sleeve notes. The five themselves are then presented in a slim slip-case which fits neatly on any CD shelf. All The Young Dudes was, of course, their breakthrough album and includes the hit of the same name. The remastering brings more power and bite to the tracks that was somehow stifled on the original vinyl. Mott is the highlight of their career, and a rock classic - a must for anybody's collection. The Hoople from 1974 is more keyboard orientated and maybe suffers in comparison from the "follow that, then" syndrome. It's still a good album, tho'. Drive On, recorded after the departure of Ian Hunter suffers from the lack of really good songs. If it was a debut album from a new band it would be very good, but from a well-established band it should perhaps have been better. Shouting And Pointing is better, but singer Nigel Benjamin was to leave soon afterwards which resulted in the demise of a fine band. Inclusion of the two post-Hunter albums is stretching things somewhat, as it was a different band (as hinted at by the name change to MOTT). There's nothing here for the fan who already has the individual albums, but for the fan wishing to investigate Mott The Hoople beyond the compilations this is worthy of consideration.

After Mott broke up in 1972, David Bowie, a long-time fan, felt they were too important to be allowed to die, and so offered them Suffragette City. Mott turned it down ("Not good enough"), and so Bowie offered them All The Young Dudes. Realising immediately this was it, they accepted. David offered to produce the album, and to get his management interested, and the rest is history. This album is the result of those sessions. The songs are certainly there - half this album would remain in the live set to the end - but the problem comes with the production. Although Bowie tidied up their sound, and instilled a sense of studio discipline into their work, compared with their Island albums, I find the life and above all the energy has been throttled out of the songs. That said, many fans still rate this album highly, partly no doubt due to the stepping stone this album became to eventual world-wide fame. Highlights of this album are the title track (natch), album opener Sweet Jane (much better IMO than Lou Reed's original), Mick Ralphs' Ready For Love (which would later be re-recorded by Bad Company) and the albums closer, Sea Diver. Interestingly, three tracks (Momma's Little Jewel, One Of The Boys and Sea Diver) had previously been recorded during Mott's Island days.

Mott started 1973 with no tour commitments and no album already in the can - a first for them. They broke with Mainman (who wanted to concentrate on Bowie), and so after a handful of hastily-arranged club dates in the UK (during which they parted company with organist Verden Allen) they entered the studios to record their sixth album. A couple of the producers they wanted were unavailable, so they decided to produce it themselves. The result is one of the best albums of the 70's. The songs are there, the playing is top notch, the arrangements are spot on, the production is superb... There is nothing to fault this album. It is the fan's favourite by a mile, while Rolling Stone magazine has called it "one of the great lost masterpieces of modern rock". If you are just a casual fan and are looking to buy just one Mott The Hoople album, then make it this one. The 2006 reissue sees excellent sound quality, with the "moan" at the start of Whizz Kid thankfully restored. However, All The Way From Memphis appears to be a different mix, with the sax more prominent and Mick Ralphs' guitar mixed down in places. The bonus tracks are also odd - demos of Honaloochie Boogie and Nightmare, but no sign of the demo of Hymn For The Dudes - odd!

This, the first Mott album after Ian Hunter's departure, is a difficult one. Mott had had to find a replacement guitarist (again!) and, more importantly, a replacement vocalist/front-man. After listening to some 150 hopefuls, they chose the then-unknown Nigel Benjamin. This is, in many ways then, a new band. However, Mott with Hun ter had recorded some seven studio albums (plus a killer live album). On that basis, this album is somewhat lacking. Ian Hunter had, along with Mick Ralphs, written most of Mott's songs. With both now gone the song-writing duties were taken on by Overend. He does his best, but the remaining Motts weren't (yet) contributing, and the songs lack Hunter's incisive perception and style. Oh, this album certainly has its moments. By Tonight is a tight opener and Monte Carlo (the first single) rocks. But there is too much filler, and Love Now is just peurile cock-rock at its most basic. Latter-day Mott The Hoople were recording five-star smashes, but this one rates no more than a three.

Mott's second album, recorded in the Spring of 1976. With all the band members contributing to the song-writing, the result is an altogether stronger album than its predecessor. Ray Major's guitar is kept back in the mix, with prominence going to Morgan Fisher's keyboards. I understand there may have been technical problems during the mixing of this album, added to which producer Eddie Kramer was approaching fatherhood, so his heart probably wasn't 100% in the project.

This, the first Mott album after Ian Hunter's departure, is a difficult one. Mott had had to find a replacement guitarist (again!) and, more importantly, a replacement vocalist/front-man. After listening to some 150 hopefuls, they chose the then-unknown Nigel Benjamin. This is, in many ways then, a new band. However, Mott with Hun ter had recorded some seven studio albums (plus a killer live album). On that basis, this album is somewhat lacking. Ian Hunter had, along with Mick Ralphs, written most of Mott's songs. With both now gone the song-writing duties were taken on by Overend. He does his best, but the remaining Motts weren't (yet) contributing, and the songs lack Hunter's incisive perception and style. Oh, this album certainly has its moments. By Tonight is a tight opener and Monte Carlo (the first single) rocks. But there is too much filler, and Love Now is just peurile cock-rock at its most basic. Latter-day Mott The Hoople were recording five-star smashes, but this one rates no more than a three.

Mott's second album, recorded in the Spring of 1976. With all the band members contributing to the song-writing, the result is an altogether stronger album than its predecessor. Ray Major's guitar is kept back in the mix, with prominence going to Morgan Fisher's keyboards. I understand there may have been technical problems during the mixing of this album, added to which producer Eddie Kramer was approaching fatherhood, so his heart probably wasn't 100% in the project.
