Mozart was composing symphonies right from his early years, the first one dating back to 1764: he was then eight years old. Written in 1788, the dramatic Symphony No.40 is one of Mozart's major masterpieces. Despite its lightweight orchestration, without trumpets or drums, it is a forceful, energetic piece whose four movements are pervaded by a sombre atmosphere of uneasy, sometimes anguished, tension. Of admirable balance and proportions, the Symphony No.41, "Jupiter", is Mozart's last, also dating from 1788. With the heroic character of its four movements, together with its warmth and elegance, it makes an impression of ideal classicality. The Allegro molto finale has a masterly coda containing a superb fugal episode, treated by Mozart in an extraordinarily bold manner.

Wonderful jazz from the German born pianist Florian Ross and his quintet (piano, tenor sax, trombone, bass and drums). Ross decided on a tenor-trombone fronting the traditional rhythm section. The overall effect is one of unpretentious good humor and humble swing. Ross' writing is at once angular and straight ahead. He and his band perform with a controlled abandon that is very appealing.

If you want these works, then you will find no finer recording in the catalog than this one, now permanently available thanks to Arkivmusic.com's "on demand" process (with original booklet and notes). Although the most familiar works are "The Philosopher" (with its two English horns replacing the usual oboes) and the "Roxelane" symphony, the standout piece actually is Symphony No. 80 in D minor. Its first movement is one of the funniest pieces that Haydn ever wrote, as well as one of the most disturbing to those with an exaggerated belief that great music must be serious. Here, Haydn mocks his own "Sturm und Drang" manner with an insouciant barrel-organ tune that trips up the anguished opening at every turn. The finale is a syncopated riot, and it's all played with amazing virtuosity and precision by the conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. DG's sonics are a touch bright but are generally well-balanced with plenty of impact. This is an essential disc for any Haydn symphony collection.--David Hurwitz
