Buddy Tate was one of the most relaxed, humorous and amenable of musicians, with a personal style that was glowingly reflected in the supple and occasionally gently mocking elegance of his saxophone playing. Like many of the lyrical and romantic jazz performers of his era, Tate could perform miniature miracles with minimal materials. Shuffling a handful of soft, buttery notes and mingling them with a textural repertoire of intimately whispering intonations, was one of the most agreeable experiences in postwar jazz. But Tate could also be an exciting, hard-swinging player too, and his control of the horn in its upper register predated many of the technical advances in saxophone playing that were made by the modernists in hard bop and the avant garde.

Friday the 13th is a date many of us view with a certain amount of foreboding. For those who love vinyl albums, it’s their lucky day: on Friday, May 13th Edel:Kultur unties another bundle of re-releases from the catalogue of the iconic MPS label situated in Germany’s Black Forest. The newest package from the Reforest the Legend series embraces the decade of 1970-1980, and covers a wide diversity of styles. Piano lovers can look forward to Oscar Peterson’s trio classic “Walking the Line”, which finds the Canadian keyboard giant and partners bassist Georg Mraz and drummer Ray Price in top form. Brazilian Baden Powell provides for sophisticated guitar sounds on the 1970 album “Images on Guitar”, as he congenially pairs up with singer Janine de Waleyne. From the same year, “The Hub of Hubbard” presents trumpeter Freddie Hubbard with his quintet at an important crossroads in his career. Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander’s unforgettable appearance at the 1976 Montreux is caught on tape. Finally, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson gathers together jazz luminaries Chick Corea, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins for his 1980 recording “Mirror Mirror”. Once again sound engineers Christoph Stickel and Dirk Sommer have scrupulously remastered the original recordings.

Using the purest audiophile analog techniques, this recording of Ella Fitzgerald’s favorites captures the dynamics of singer, composer, and trombone player Aubrey Logan and composer, pianist, and singer Bill Cantos plus friends from the L.A. Network’s outstanding pool of jazz musicians and singers.

«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

Star Fleet Project was a pretty slim, weird bit of ephemera when originally released in 1983. The mini-LP had two pretty good (but long) songs on side one, and a seemingly interminable 13-minute jam on side two. There were no band photos on the front or back, just a mysterious "Brian May + Friends" emblazoned above a grainy film still of a Japanese robot on the front cover and an unassuming rundown of contributing artists on the back: Edward Van Halen, Alan Gratzer, Phil Chen and Fred Mandel. Of course, everyone recognized Edward Van Halen, but only the most devoted rock fans were likely familiar with Gratzer (drummer, REO Speedwagon), while bassist Chen and pianist Mandel were session pros whose name recognition was limited to the most voracious liner-notes readers. Star Fleet—in its brevity, intentional anonymity, and utter disregard for marketplace concerns—felt a bit talismanic, a pre-internet slice of IYKYK.

«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

The idea for the 6 Sonatas for Solo Violin Op.27 came to Eugène Ysaÿe in 1923 after attending a recital by the Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti, then aged 30, in which he performed Bach's Partitas and Sonatas. The Ysaÿe cycle was completed in July 1923, and published the following year. Its works draw on Bach's legacy while building a bridge to new forms of composition at the dawn of the twentieth century, in an effort to reflect the technical and stylistic development of the violin over the previous two hundred years.
