As much for the wider public as for his great many fans, Neil Young’s Harvest represents the pinnacle of his rich discography from the seventies. Founded upon country-rock and melancholic folk, the so-called Loner’s art shines ever brightly throughout this fourth album, released back in February 1972. It is a gold mine full of bucolic, pastoral gems, recorded with a new group of brilliant musicians called the Stray Gators, with Ben Keith on steel guitar, Kenny Buttrey on drums, Tim Drummond on bass, and the great Jack Nitzsche on piano and arrangement. Harvest, which frequently displays his tumultuous relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress (mother of his first son Zeke) also incorporates some impressive somber moments, such as in ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’ - a stunning ballad about his guitarist Danny Whitten’s heroin addiction, who died of an overdose in November that same year, just after being kicked out of the band by Neil Young.

You’re about to be transported to October 23, 1968, to Greenwich Village in New York City. Jazz in the 1960s was one of the music’s greatest eras, and thanks to a gentleman named George Klabin, we have this important document of one of its leading talents.

George was only 22 years old at the time, full of passion and engineering skill, when he took advantage of an offer by Evan’s longtime manager, Helen Keane, to record Bill’s new trio. George aired these two fully recorded sets of music one time on his radio show on Columbia University’s WKCR-FM and these tapes have been stored away all these years until now.

This double album includes 93 minutes of never-before-heard studio recordings by the great Bill Evans with captivating performances by Evans in solo, duo, and trio settings. It is one of the most extraordinary musical archeological finds.

The recordings on this album constitute the material from a June 20, 1968 session recorded by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS) and Joachim-Ernst Brendt in Germany’s Black Forest that was originally intended for release on HGBS’s legendary MPS label but for some reason were never released.

On ‘Sophisticated Lady’ Thalen plays jazz standards in their most vulnerable form, only accompanied by pianist Bert van den Brink and Hein van de Geyn on double bass. Her violin mainly sticks with the original melody and does not immediately flee towards the usual improvisation. In a frank and honest fashion Thalen wants to make these songs heard as they are. This seems cushy and in a first hearing, the music may sound quite accessible. But apart from the fact that nowadays it isn’t common to play mainly the melody, the plainness of this approach appears to be fairly misleading.
