If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Eels’ Mark Oliver Everett will be pretty chuffed if he ever hears this debut album by Peterborough duo The Candle Thieves. He’d be impressed how Scott McEwan and, er, Glockenshiels have crafted an album of charming, upbeat yet wistful summery tunes.
There’s the bittersweet nostalgia of ‘The Sunshine Song’, the Weezer-esque ‘Sharks And Bears’ and the heartbreaking three-part finale, ‘Singapore’, which ends the album with a plaintive, melancholy sigh. It’s occasionally a little too twee (particularly ‘My Love Will Clap Its hands For You’) but, on the whole, ‘Sunshine And Other Misfortunes’ is a delightful gem full of oddball charm.
