An album that combined tracks that Joe had cut as singles for the Spring label, mostly in the south, but a few on the east coast – with production either by Simon and John Richbourg, or by the Gamble/Huff team in Philly. Titles include "Step By Step", "Drowning In The Sea Of Love", "Trouble In My Home", and "Help Me Make It Through The Night".

The Power of Joe SImon is an apt title for this collection. The man had a versatile, booming, smoky voice that was perfect for singing everything from soul tunes and blues numbers to more country-influenced fare. This set veers headlong into soul territory, collecting some excellent early 1970s singles that Simon recorded. The original 10-song LP has now been expanded to 18 tracks with some non-LP B-sides and unissued tracks.

Some of these songs were big hits for Simon, especially the two Gamble & Huff-produced songs, "Drowning in a Sea of Love" and "Power of Love," But even the songs that aren't as well known are terrific tunes, bursting with soulful joy, Simon skillfully wrapping that distinctive voice around the melody of each tune. Of the bonus tracks, he does a very pleasing cover of "Indiana Wants Me" and the closing track, "Weekend on the West Coast," is a sweet, sentimental gem.

The booklet that comes with the CD isn't exactly packed with information, but there is a reproduction of the back cover of the original album plus some vintage advertising done to promote the record. A real soul treat!
