01. Robert Fripp
11 September 1979 - Non Loop Idea IV
With an unamplified guitar and a cassette recorder, Robert sits down to record a series ideas and sketches. Starting with an introduction that sounds like it’s about to go into a rendition of Hawkwind’s Silver Machine, this is about as “rock guitar” as Robert gets. Perhaps this is a conscious reference back to the rocking out aspirations of You Burn Me Up I’m A Cigarette? Moving out from its 12-bar beginnings some suitably left-field twists occur but essentially this is a bluesy vamp, and as such, something of a rarity. Like the previous Non-Loop idea, this one never did find a home and we can only imagine what this might have sounded like played by the League of Gentlemen.

02-03. League of Gentlemen
10 March 1980
“It’s a ballad thing and requires sensitivity” says Robert to his chums, Sara, Barry and Johnny. What follows is a first-time run through of what would eventually become Matte Kudasai, heard here gingerly making its way out into the world. With elements of the equally sensitive, North Star, from Exposure being discernible, these renditions may border on being rough and ready but of course are not without considerable charm.

30 April 1997
Taken from the ill-fated rehearsals that were meant to have yielded the Double Trio’s follow-up to Thrak, here’s Bill and Pat grabbing a line or two and take it out for a walk.
Sadly, like the bulk of other ideas offered up during KC’s time in SIR studios, this was another piece that went undeveloped and ultimately came to nothing.
A CD of tracks from these sessions was released as KCCC 13 though this piece was not included and is heard here for the first time.
With the Double Trio fraKctalising (P2, P1, P4 and P3) at the conclusion of these dates in April and May, Bill and Pat never worked together again.

19 May 2009 - Rehearsal
Prior to their epic world tour of 2009 of Wimborne, Broad Chalke, Bishops Cleeve, and Coventry in May 2009, the duo loosened up a little at DGM HQ. This brief excerpt gives us a clue as to what went on.

Another tasty tit-bit of the nascent Discipline piece as it gradually spirals into life. As can be heard from his yowl of pleasure, Bill B is clearly digging the new groove!

December 5 1977, Monitor Mixes
Blimey - the one that got away! A couple of monitor mix nuggets from the Exposure Power Trio of Collins, Fripp & Wetton. To these ears, the descending theme sketched out by the terrific trio is one that hasn't been subsequently recycled. Yet another "oh,what if" moment which you'll enjoy hearing them rip it up, tear it down and almost every other cliche in the rock writer's lexicon - up to and including "smokin'"

12 September 1979 Non Loop Idea V And VI
These lo-fi recordings are the equivalent of Robert scribbling down ideas as they fly by, and on these two, Robert lets his inner Bootsy Collins off the leash and gets all fonk-kay! Is just me or does the first one (V) sound a bit like some unfinished business from the old Guts On My Side track? And is the second piece here (VI) suggestive of the probing bass line which would later turn up on tracks such as the title track of Sunday All Over The World and the LOCG’s toe-tapper, The Driving Force?

10 March 1980
A right little toe-tapper and no mistake. Boppin’ Bobby and the gang cut the rug and do the frug with this cracking dance number. Those fast running lines from Under Heavy Manners and which foreshadow Frame By Frame provide a direct injection of atypical adrenalin which fans love so much. At around 2.40 Robert counts the team in again and this time we are treated to clipped chords that evoke images of Television, Talking Heads and hot sticky nights at CBGBs. You know, if String Theory is right, there’s an alternative universe where the League of Gentlemen are top of the charts!

Keyboard Loop
Found amidst a clutch of unmarked cassettes by the intrepid Mister Stormy, here we have Robert with his trusty Roland keyboard trying out some ideas. Although there’s no indication of a date or location here, what we can be sure of is that the chords and lines being deployed occupy the same luscious melodic richness as the gorgeous title track of Evening Star. Can’t you just hear a yearning guitar solo going over the top of this?

11 September 1979
An interesting one this. Robert and a guitar working out an idea for a new piece. The piece in question encompasses motifs that would appear on his solo album, Exposure, and of course eagle-eared KC enthusiasts will recognise that the reappearance of the figures that were last used on the ill-fated Guts On My Side - a track that was performed once only by Crimso back in 1974.

Dig those crazy bongos! Here’s fascinating alternative assemblage of what would become Projekct X’s Heaven and Earth. The brainchild of Pat Mastelotto, Trey Gunn and engineer Bill Munyon, the working title for this track at this stage was Spy Kritters. Clearly it’s early days for this edit and it would be subjected to many hours of intensive tweaking and cutting in Nashville and Austin before it was ready. The final version was given its name by Fripp and was considered by many to be the stand-out track on 2000’s The ConstruKction of Light.

10 December 1992
It’s one thing to come up with a tune or a riff. It’s another thing entirely to find the right feel or approach required to bring it to fruitition.
Here we find Fripp and Gunn working through the early stages of what would eventually end up as Vrooom. Not everything has found its place yet but you can hear it’s well on the way.

01. ProjeKct Three
17 May 2000
Recorded just two days before the debut of the Double Duo at 12th & Porter in Nashville, Pat Mastelotto, Trey Gunn and Robert Fripp briefly reincarnate themselves as ProjeKct Three. Underpinned by a metronomic pulse the terrific trio (as P3 were often called) rapidly reassembled to put their gear through its paces with a little limb-loosening exchanges.

03. Travis & Fripp
19 May 2009 - Rehearsal
Recorded immediately prior to Travis & Fripp’s first world tour of Dorset, we hear the team in reflective mode. Although not quite in the zone, these call and response exchanges show two musicians working on ideas and moods and making sure all the buttons on the rig did what they were supposed to do. Not all of the sounds at the disposal of their fingertips and toes would make it to the live stage but tasty bass licks aside,T&F unleash a roar of fuzzed-out lead lines and squalling sax that’ll put hairs on your chest!

10 March 1980
This is definitely a case of what goes around comes around as Fripp and Andrews work though a cyclical theme. As with a pebble thrown into a pool, the ripples of this approach slowly moved away from the League of Gentlemen towards the Mighty Crim waiting in the wings of 1981.

Hope
Always a beautiful piece as part of the Robert Fripp String Quartet, Hope appeared on The Bridge Between (1993)and on the DGM sampler, Sometimes God Hides (1996). Robert makes the notes spring and sing whilst Trey swoops and soars on the Stick. Sublime stuff guaranteed to wash away the day’s troubles.

25 October 1994
A fantastic confection of Vrooom intercut with the day-today drudgery of getting levels prior to recording.
Whilst Real World offered a relatively luxurious environment compared to what Crimso were usually used to, the head-phones in the Stone Room (where Pat and Bill were located)were problematic from the get-go as you can clearly hear!
A great bit of fun from the hands of Mister Stormy.

08. King Crimson
26 April, 1994
Now this is something you don’t hear everyday: Thrak-era jamming in an area that isn’t bookended by the thrakking process. With Belew maintaining a mesmeric guitar figure containing a vaguely bluesy feel to it, the rest of the team move and groove around him. At the very beginning Robert can be heard throwing a couple of lines similar to Sleepless around, whilst Trey conjures up some spooky theremin-like vapours which drift over the twisting and turning percussion. It’s an open-ended moment of exploration by the team and although no definitive or earth-shattering conclusion is reached, once again, Mister Stormy shines a light on KC rehearsing as part of the sessions that would lead to Vrooom.

6 December 1996
How does that saying go? great oaks from little acorns grow? There’s certainly a couple of the little fellas dotted around in this writing rehearsal dating back to 1996 unearthed by Mister Stormy.
Of course it would take quite a while for those seeds to grow into their final form but we get to hear the process at the very beginning. Elements of TCOL, and of course, FaKcts Of Life, jostle for position in this fascinating first pass across what would later go on to become some late-period Crimso classics.
