Ever since releasing the first volume of the "This Is Acid Jazz" compilation series in 1990, Instinct Records (based in New York) put the "This Is Acid Jazz" logo on nearly every release in the jazz/dance fusion side of its catalog in the 1990s.

The first "This Is Acid Jazz" compilations contained tracks licensed from the Acid Jazz label (based in the UK), plus Instinct's own signings. Many of the licensed tracks had already appeared in the UK on the Totally Wired series of compilations.

Starting in 1998, the more commercial artists such as Gota and Count Basic were moved to the new Instinct Jazz label/series, which focused on the "smooth jazz" genre.

Some releases that would seem to be a continuation of This Is Acid Jazz are branded as Instinct Jazz due to their content, so they're not included here (e.g. Bossa Brava 3 and New Voices 4). Also not included are most of the Trip Hop & Jazz, Original Raw Soul, and Future Jazz compilations, except for those which say "This Is Acid Jazz" on them.
