«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

Before every third new band in the world was shoegaze or had discovered the greatness of either My Blood Valentine or the Deftones, No Joy was already exploring the genre and making a mark. Formed in 2009 by Jasamine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd, the Montreal band has since morphed into a solo venture for the former, who ventures into dream pop, electronic and indie rock. Now more than a decade and a half later, White-Gluz welcomes Bugland, co-produced with Fire-Toolz (who also mixed the record and guests on the album). Heba Kadry is on mastering duty—a shift after three LPs with Jorge Elbrecht.

Bugland showcases some of No Joys' leanings toward the dreamy, but instead of employing Kevin Shields-like wall-of-sound tactics, the album moves further toward the electronic end of things. White-Gluz leans into influences like The Charlatans UK, Jesus and Mary Chain's Honey's Dead era, Curve and even Garbage. Classic dream pop and indie tendencies shine brightly, too, with notes of Lush and even Belly and The Breeders showing up in No Joys' memorable pastiches.

In a nod to classic Cocteau Twins, first track "Garbage Dream House" opens with glitchy electronic feedback and continues with massive, reverb-drenched guitars—but without Elizabeth Fraser's elven vocabulary. It's the ideal firestarter, mean enough to quench the bloodthirst for loud guitars but serene enough to drive a quaint melody. Once the following title track locks into a breakbeat, you're already hooked in for the ride, which ends with "Jelly Meadow Bright." Incorporating power-electronic vocals over the arpeggio-focused track punctuated by synth stabs, White-Gluz fully demonstrates her willingness to push the envelope.
