Rooted in classic black metal traditions, Quebecois stalwarts Spectral Wound may worship at the altar of their forefathers but they aren't strictly riding their coattails. Spectral Wound's direction strips away the first wave's hiss and DIY approach in favor of thunderous production and a venomous performance, creating a new look at an old aesthetic. So while the band waved to their elders with one hand, they most definitely threw the bird with the other.
On their third long-player, Songs of Blood and Mire, Spectral Wound apply the "if it ain't broke" methodology across seven new tracks running under 50 minutes. Using snarling melodic gods like Dissection, Immortal and Marduk as a jumping-off point, Songs of Blood and Mire is menacing, if not entirely familiar. "Fevers and Suffering" starts the record off with a mean riff over a half-speed beat before the rolling drum fill announces an onslaught of blasts. Many of the songs fit the same schema, counting on classic—some would argue tired—tropes within the melodic black metal world. The sixth track, "A Coin upon the Tongue," takes its own direction, heading down Watain's Sworn to the Dark-era approach of black rock 'n' roll for part of the way.
What truly separates the band from the pack is the sense of dread that permeates like funereal stench and an urgency that make their tracks so compelling. And though no one would ever confuse them for an epic black metal band, Spectral Wound create atmosphere without striving for it, and are not reaching for majesty when they achieve it.
These Canadians have created a unique, yet semi-recognizable take on the savage, icy chill created by the early sons of Scandinavian extreme music, and with remarkable accuracy. While that in itself isn't revolutionary, Spectral Wound's approach just might be. Where passive fans might only hear songs rooted in tradition, discerning fans will no doubt clamp down on the baited hook for a band who have innovated on the black metal archetype. And truthfully, isn't that who this record was written for? Трэклист:01. Fevers and Suffering
