«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

From the dream-like worlds depicted in the 2018 masterpiece, Singularity, to the transcendent healing of Music For Psychedelic Therapy (2021), Jon Hopkins' music has always sought a relationship with higher planes of existence. These are trip-fuelled quests in many cases; Immunity (2013), for example, echoed tropes of drug-induced, dancefloor euphoria. But even before Hopkins decided to stop taking psychedelics regularly back in 2019, he was always adamant about this practice serving a higher purpose—to enhance meditation or his connection with the divine. A sober listen to RITUAL in a quiet, dimly-lit place might be enough for open-minded listeners to enable this kind of experience for themselves. Indeed, for Hopkins, the album is meant to be "like a tool, even a machine, for opening portals within your inner world, for unlocking things that are hidden and buried."

At times deeply intimate and personal, and at others, expansive and joyful, RITUAL is a 41-minute outpouring of pure, ecstatic spiritual expression. The musical palette is characteristic of earlier ventures, but altogether otherworldly in its composition: Shepard tones that rise incessantly toward the heavens ("part vi – solar goddess return"); harmonically rich drones and hypnotic, war-like percussion ("part v – evocation"); moments of perfect stillness, akin to standing on top of a mountain, breathing in the clear air and gazing upon the world below ("part viii – nothing is lost"). The ceremony is facilitated by choice collaborators including Clark, Cherif Hashizume, Vylana, 7RAYS, and Ishq, each of whom has contributed significant time and substance to the work in the form of hundreds of parts: building blocks which were crucial for Hopkins in "building the temple." This is music of the spheres—or as close as it gets for us mere mortals.
