«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

Having conquered the bluegrass world with her awesome fast picking on acoustic guitar and banjo and maturing talent as a songwriter, Molly Tuttle has now taken a swing for the pop fences. With producer Jay Joyce and songwriters Ketch Secor and Kevin Griffin, Tuttle has fashioned So Long Little Miss Sunshine, an album that will propel her towards a wider audience. The changes are tasteful, tuneful, and extremely well done as the irresistible first single, "That's Gonna Leave a Mark," demonstrates with insistent drums, organ accents, and winning arrangement all built around Tuttle's masterful vocals. "Easy," with an upward trill at the end of every vocal line, is country rock in the easygoing mold of the Eagles in their peak years. While the lyrics of "Old Me (New Wig)" deliberately overstate for effect, the song's overall thrust fits with the album's adventurous aims: "So Long Miss Sunshine/ Adios to my used to be/ Leave you behind, no time for goodbye/ Breaking up with the old me." While the addition of drums, still a mortal sin in the bluegrass world, puts a definitive mark on the departure from her past recordings, Tuttle's bluegrass past remains a presence. As the guitar runs in the driving opener "Everything Burns" prove, there's still plenty of Tuttle's acoustic virtuosity to love. The same is true of "Story of My So-called Life" where she plays both acoustic guitar and banjo. Near the middle of "The Highway Knows," Tuttle rips off one of her customary rapid-fire solos. For fans of her more bluegrass-leaning music there's the drumless "Rosalee"—an upbeat murder ballad in which Tuttle expertly navigates the menacing lyrics, "Rosalee/ You better run before they hunt you down in Tennessee/ Damn that deputy/ 'Cause a jealous heart ain't worth the cost/ Of hanging from the gallow tree." Although Tuttle's always had an aptitude for left-field covers, her ethereal take on Charli XCX's "I Love It" is a pleasant surprise. Rising to a new level with this well-written and beautifully produced collection, Tuttle's gifts are flourishing in intriguing new ways.
