TRACKLIST:
DISC ONE : PRE PURPLE & DEEP PURPLE MK1
[1] The Outlaws / Keep A Knockin'
1964 • Ritchie Blackmore. This was the band's last UK single, featuring two manic Blackmore guitar solos. Produced by the legendary Joe Meek. Remastered a-side.
[2] M.I.5 / You'll Never Stop Me Loving You R
1966 • featuring Rod Evans (and Ian Paice). The a-side of their one and only single, this was Evans' first recording, a very Gene Pitney-ish smoocher.
[3] M.I.5 / Only Time Will Tell R C
1966 • featuring Ian Paice (and Rod Evans). A typical mid-sixties beat number with Paice on drums, the b-side of the above single. Never reissued before.
[4] Johnny Kidd & The Pirates / Send For That Girl R
1966 • Nick Simper. Simper only recorded a few tracks with Kidd, who died in a car-crash in 1966.
[5] Santa Barbara Machine Head / Porcupine Juice
1967 • Jon Lord. Recorded as a try-out for a new band, they ran out of money after recording just three instrumental tracks, which were then shelved. The full session is on the Pre Purple People CD.
[6] Episode Six / I Can See Through You
1967 • Roger Glover (and Ian Gillan). An early example of a Glover composition, issued on a Pye a-side, and one of the band's best studio performances (Gillan on vocals).
[7] Episode Six / Mr Universe
1968 • Ian Gillan (and Roger Glover). One of the earliest Gillan screams on record, a Chapter One b-side, and a song he later revisited in 1979 with his own band.
[8] Trapeze / Medusa
1970 • Glenn Hughes. A good example of this power-trio in early progressive rock mode on their second album, with Hughes on bass and vocals.
[9] The Government / Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is
1971 • David Coverdale. A faithful cover of an obscure 1969 Chicago b-side from Coverdale's only known pre-Purple studio session.
[10] Zephyr / See My People Come Together
1971 • Tommy Bolin. From their much improved second album, an example of Bolin's early compositional skill and confident guitar work.
Deep Purple
[11] Hush
1968 • Shades Of Deep Purple. Taken off the album, this strong cover gave them their first big American hit and an early boost to their career. From the remastered CD.
[12] Help
1968 • Shades Of Deep Purple. The band wanted this cover of a Beatles track as their debut single but were over-ruled. From the remastered CD.
[13] Shield
1969 • The Book Of Taliesyn. A strong original number from the second album with more than a hint of psychedelia. From the remastered CD.
[14] Listen, Learn, Read On
1969 • The Book Of Taliesyn. This original number from the second LP inspired the sleeve illustration. From the remastered CD.
[15] Kentucky Woman
1969 • The Book Of Taliesyn. Neil Diamond was pleased when the band covered one of his numbers. The Book Of Taliesyn was recorded in 1968 but not issued in the UK until 1969. From the remastered CD.
[16] Playground
1968 • The Book of Taliesyn out-take. Recorded for the LP but left without a vocal and not issued until 1989. This mix by Guy Massey was done in 1998 at Abbey Road for the 2000 remastered CD.
[17] Emmaretta
1969 • a-side. Recorded in January during the third album sessions for release as a single. From the remastered CD.
[18] The Bird Has Flown
1969 • U.S. b-side. Recorded at the same session, this version was only issued in America on a single. From the remastered CD.

DISC TWO : DEEP PURPLE MK1 and MK2
[1] Why Didn't Rosemary
1969 • Deep Purple (Third Album). "An attempt to widen the scope of a plain 12 bar sequence; in fact the verses are 14 bars long and the guitar solo verses are 17 bars long" according to the LP notes. Strange lyrics and a great guitar solo. From the remastered CD.
[2] Hallelujah
1969 • a-side. Gillan and Glover's first recording with the band, done in June 1969.
[3] Ricochet U
August 11th 1969 • BBC session. An early version of Speed King. For all the BBC studio sessions we have worked from the best available sources, restored missing solos, etc. All are in their original mono. DJ intros have been retained where these run over the music.
[4] Bird Has Flown R C
August 11th 1969 • BBC session. Mk 2 cover a Mk 1 track, contrast this performance with the original on Disc 1. Tracks 3 & 4 were recorded for the BBC 'Symonds On Sunday' show, aired Aug. 17. 1969. This version came out as a b-side in 1980 but has never been on CD.
[5] Hush (live) R
September 24th 1969 • Royal Albert Hall, London. Mk 2 retained a number of older tracks for a time. This was recorded during the band's pre-Concerto set. Remixed by Jonathan Allen at Abbey Road, April 2001.
[6] Concerto, Third Movement reprise (live) U
September 24th 1969 • Royal Albert Hall, London. Called back for an encore, the band and orchestra performed part of the third movement again, started by Ian Paice. Remixed by Jonathan Allen at Abbey Road, April 2001 for the special edition of the Concerto album.
[7] Wring That Neck (live) U
October 4th 1969 • Montreux Casino. Recorded live in Europe, Mk 2's instrumental show-case, showing the band's jazz leanings. Mastered from a quarter inch soundboard tape at Abbey Road, April 2002. The rest of the show will appear on a Sonic Zoom release later in 2002.
[8] Jam Stew U
October 31st. 1969 • BBC session. An embryonic track which didn't survive the In Rock sessions, making this frenetic BBC performance doubly interesting. Blackmore later reused the riff on the title track of an album called Green Bullfrog.
[9] Speed King U
October 31st 1969 • BBC session. A powerful taste of the album to come. Tracks 8 & 9 were recorded for Stuart Henry's Noise At Nine, aired Nov 9. 1969.
[10] Cry Free R
January 1970 • In Rock out-take. This track was left in the can and first issued on the Powerhouse collection in 1977. It finally made CD on the 1995 Anniversary remastered CD edition of In Rock.
[11] Hard Loving Man U
April 21st 1970 • BBC session. Though sadly truncated (the BBC edited tracks and then destroyed the original tapes), this has a raw energy which is hard to ignore. Tracks 11, 12 & 13 were recorded for Mike Harding's 'Sound Of The Seventies' programme.
[12] Bloodsucker U
April 21st 1970 • BBC session. The edited versions were reused on a transcription show called 'Top Of The Pops', with DJ Brian Matthew enthusing at the end. Even with the cut, it still sounds awesome.
[13] Living Wreck U
April 21st 1970 • BBC session. Once again despite Brian Matthew's talk-over at the start (which we've left on) and the editing, this version makes riveting listening.
[14] Studio Chat / Jam
A brief snatch of the band having fun during the Flight Of The Rat session.
[15] Flight Of The Rat
1970 • In Rock. "Just to remind you that there are other ways of turning on". Glover's remix from the 1995 anniversary CD.

DISC THREE : DEEP PURPLE MK2
[1] Mandrake Root (live) R
November 12th 1970 • Stockholm Konserthuset. A 4 -track of this number was found in March 2002 and specially mixed for this set by Peter Mew at Abbey Road, June 2002. The track previously appeared on the Scandinavian Nights CD. (It has been incorrectly labelled on the first pressing of the box set as being from Aachen 1970)
[2] Grabsplatter R C
September 23rd 1970 • BBC session. A mono BBC set recorded for a BBC transcription disc and not broadcast in the UK at the time. The first number is based on the riff to I'm Alone, a track they recorded a couple of months later. This version came out as a b-side in 1980 but has never been on CD.
[3] Child In Time U
September 23rd 1970 • BBC session. 'The story of a loser - it could be you.' One of the band's best loved tracks, with a remarkable vocal performance from Gillan, and Blackmore matching his stunning studio solo in quality. These versions are often as good (maybe better) than the studio ones.
[4] Jon Lord interview U
The BBC's Brian Matthew asks Jon about the success of the hit single (below).
[5] Black Night U
September 23rd 1970 • BBC session. The session included this taut performance of the commercial and progressive hit in question, which was high in the charts by this time.
[6] Into The Fire U
September 23rd 1970 • BBC session. 'Out of the frying pan...' Perhaps the heaviest track the band ever did. Hard rock summed up in a concise, powerful three minute nutshell, with a rambling DJ intro.
[7] Fools U
1971• Fireball album outtake. Normally Gillan worked on top of finished backing tracks and only his final take was saved, so this May '71 version with Gillan ad-libbing vocals is fascinating and unique. Mixed by Glover during 1996 there wasn't room on the Fireball CD, but it has been the subject of more requests since it became known than just about anything else.
[8] Fireball R
1971• Fireball. This LP title track taped in February (kicking off with the sound of the studio air-conditioner being powered up!) gave the band their third and last U.K. hit when pulled off as a single. From the 1996 remastered CD.
[9] No One Came R
1971• Fireball. One perk of helping compile this set is to include a few personal favourites. This track to me is the band at their absolute creative peak in the studio. Funky and inventive hard rock with a masterful vocal performance. From the 1996 remastered CD.
[10] Demon's Eye R
1971• Fireball. The last number recorded for the LP in June 1971, to replace Strange Kind Of Woman which Warners insisted go on the American edition. Glover's remix from the 1996 CD.

DISC FOUR : DEEP PURPLE MK2 & MK3
[1] No No No (live) C
September 1971• German TV. The Fireball album didn't transfer to the stage too well but this dynamic, over the top rendition (with a very well refreshed Gillan ad-libbing in places) shows how good it could sound, performed live in a television studio. Unedited.
[2] Highway Star (live) C
September 1971• German TV. Just when they should have been promoting the Fireball LP, they surprised the TV audience with this brand new track, the earliest known performance of a Mk 2 classic. Unedited.
[3] Smoke On The Water R C
1972 • Machine Head, Quad Mix. A collection without Smoke? We daren't! Sometimes it's worth going back to the original of such a well-known song to remind ourselves just how powerful it was. The first number taped for the album too. From the UK Quadrophonic mix done by Peter Mew back in 1974, first time on CD.
[4] Never Before R C
1972 • Machine Head, Quad Mix. From the 1974 UK Quadrophonic mix, first time on CD. For once everyone in the band agreed with EMI's choice of this a single, it was both funky and catchy, yet it sold relatively poorly - maybe everyone had bought the album already...
[5] When A Blind Man Cries
1972 • Machine Head ...If so they missed this gem on the b-side. Recorded during the album sessions, a slow plaintive vocal performance over a nicely minimal blues backing, it sounded even better on Glover's wonderful remix from the 1997 anniversary CD.
[6] Strange Kind Of Woman (live) R
March 9th 1972 • Paris Theatre, BBC In Concert. The band's second impressive showcase on this important show concentrated on Machine Head, but did include a rendition of this Fireball track, extended by some clever and exciting vocal / guitar interplay. Remastered from the 2CD set.
[7] Lazy (live) R
August 17th 1972 • Tokyo Budo-kan. Deep Purple's double live LP Made In Japan set a trend for Japanese live albums, though few came close to matching the sheer quality and power of this release. From the 21st anniversary remixed Live in Japan 3CD.
[8] Black Night (live) U
August 16th 1972 • Osaka Festival Hall. Despite the original 2CD set and the remixed triple, fans have been vocal in their demand for the remaining unissued Made In Japan encore. The band sound exhausted during this enjoyable if chaotic performance.
[9] Woman From Tokyo
1973 • Who Do We Think We Are. One of the most popular tracks from Mk 2's final, problematical studio album. Glover's revealing 1999 remix from the 2000 CD.
[10] Smooth Dancer
1973 • Who Do We Think We Are. It was clear from the first listen that Gillan was exorcising his Blackmore demons in the bitter lyrics which he wrote for this hard-hitting track. From the remastered CD.
[11] Mary Long U
1973 • Who Do We Think We Are. Mary Whitehouse is now part of British media history, though those who campaigned hardest against her prejudices are probably aghast at the rubbish which now fills our TV screens. Glover's 1999 remix was left off the 2000 CD edition due to lack of room.
[12] Burn R
1974 • Burn. The new boys made their mark from the off, as this opening title track from the first Mk 3 album shows. Coverdale was so nervous he supplied three sets of lyrics for Blackmore to choose from. Remastered for this set from the original album.
[13] Might Just Take Your Life R
1974 • Burn. Mk 3's slower and bluesier direction also began to make itself felt as well. Remastered for this set from the original album. This is the first time any of the Burn tracks have been properly remastered.

DISC FIVE : DEEP PURPLE MK3
[1] Sail Away R
1974 • Burn. Coverdale grew up in the North-East, and his debt to Paul Rodgers is clear on this emotive performance of a song he began writing in his days before joining Purple. Remastered for this set from the original album.
[2] Coronarias Redig R
1974 • b-side. It had been six years since the band last recorded a studio instrumental, and Blackmore was given plenty of room to stretch out on this obscure b-side. Remastered for this set from the original tapes.
[3] You Fool No One (live)
April 6th 1974 • Ontario Speedway, California. One of Mk 3's most imaginative tracks, taken from one of their most infamous concerts, the music overshadowed by the trashing of a TV camera on-stage. From 'California Jamming', EMI 1996.
[4] Mistreated (live) U
April 9th 1974 • San Diego Sports Arena. This blues rock track was an album stand-out and even more powerful on-stage, though I've yet to hear it with a guitar opening quite so blisteringly awesome as the one captured here on Mk 3's first American tour. Previously unissued officially, it appeared on the Perks & Tit bootleg.
[5] Space Truckin' (live) U
May 22nd 1974 • Kilburn Gaumont. During their UK tour, the band allowed the BBC to broadcast a show in their In Concert slot, issued in 1982 as Live In London but yet to make CD in Europe. The extra-long set-closer has never been issued before anywhere.

DISC SIX : DEEP PURPLE MK3 & MK4
[1] Stormbringer R C
1974 • Stormbringer, Quad Mix. Mk 3's final album and another powerful opener designed to work well on-stage. From the October 1974 American Quadrophonic mix done by Gary Ladinsky at the Record Plant (LA), first time on CD.
[2] Soldier Of Fortune R C
1974 • Stormbringer, Quad Mix. Blackmore wasn't able to push the album where he wanted but when he did this slow moody piece contrasted with the funk elsewhere. Again from the 1974 American Quadrophonic mix, first time on CD.
[3] Hold On R C
1974 • Stormbringer, Quad Mix. I mentioned my favourites earlier, here's another. Blackmore dismissed the song and rattled off an effortless solo that still astonishes me. From the 1974 American Quadrophonic mix, first time on CD.
[4] Highball Shooter (instrumental) U
1974 • Stormbringer. This early instrumental version was done in Germany with all the guitar in place. When the vocals were added later in America the guitar work was almost erased. Previously unissued. Mix by Guy Massey at Abbey Road, April 2002.
[5] The Gypsy (live)
April 7th 1975 • Paris Palais des Sports. One of the few Stormbringer tracks to be done live, captured here on Mk 3's final tour, and Blackmore's last show with the band. From Mk 3 Final Concerts CD.
[6] Drifter (live rehearsal)
June 1975 • Californial. Mk 4 began writing almost as soon as Bolin arrived. This early rehearsal take of a Come Taste The Band track is close to the final version they would record four months later. From the Days May Come CD.
[7] Dance To The Rock'n'Roll (live jam)
June 1975 • California. Mk 4 spent days just jamming with Bolin, and everyone was very excited by the way it was shaping up. This rare surviving extract from one of those jams shows why they were all so fired up by the new band. From the Days May Come CD.
[8] This Time Around / Owed To 'G' R
1975 • Come Taste The Band. An imaginative sequence from the new album which ranged from gentle piano work to bone-crunching rock riffs. Remastered from the original 1975 tapes.
[9] Love Child R
1975 • Come Taste The Band. In places (as here) this final album stripped back the band to their bare rock roots with powerful results. Remastered from the original 1975 tapes.
[10] Wild Dogs (live)
December 15th 1975 • Tokyo Budo-kan. Bolin recorded this on his solo album Teaser and it was added to some of Purple's shows, including this excellent rendition from Japan. From the Live In Tokyo 2CD.
[11] Lady Luck (live)
February 27th 1976 • Longbeach Arena. Mk 4's shows were up and down, but when it worked it worked, as this powerful version of a Come Taste track shows. From the Live In California '76 2CD.
[12] Getting Tighter (live)
February 27th 1976 • Longbeach Arena. Glenn Hughes was able to take on more vocals with Mk 4, and drives this extended live version of an album track with confidence. From the Live In California '76 2CD.
[13] You Keep On Moving R
1975 • Come Taste The Band. All the hard work to arrange this set chronologically... but it seemed fitting to end on a Mk 4 studio track which even fans of the other line-ups admit is one of their very best. Remastered from the original 1975 tapes - and sounding wonderful for it.
