Dark Diary is his third album under the banner of AFM Records for the Romanian band Magica and the fifth on the total score. Led by female vocals the band takes the speed up and fires away fast and catchy songs. The lead guitar catches the attention when the album opens with Anywhere But Home. The intro of the song pretty long, but daring and catchy. When the vocals come in the music stays in the same speed, but the fast lead guitar fades. The vocals follow a kind of ‘pop’ structure, which makes it very catchy and melodic, flowing along with the music.
But the band doesn’t only speak speed, is also gives more calm and emotional songs, which can be found in the following song Tonight and the song Need. But even then the band has a powerful feel within the songs, giving it extra power. There are many elements within the songs that can be led back to the ‘80’s rock and metal. For example the intro of On The Side Of Evil. The chorus in the song has powerful backing vocals and will be a very good live part. The same thing can be found in the closing song We Are Horde. The album closes officially with Dear Diary, but the real powerful ending comes from We Are Horde, where Dear Diary is just a anti-climax.
Magica gives with Dark Diary a diverse album on his way. All songs carry the same amount of energy and contain catchy parts. The guitar and vocals determine the melodies of the songs with support of the keyboard and of course this couldn’t exist without a good solid base of drums and bass. Strong, powerful, catchy and solid, just a few words to conclude the review. When you hear these words you should think about Magica, Dark Diary!
