The Pathway is the debut disc from Finnish metal band Anthriel on the Lion Music label. Being from Scandinavia and doing progressive power metal puts any band in immediate peril. This genre of heavy metal is quite abundant in their native region and worldwide and, therefore, requires that the newcomer either be very good at it from the outset or definitely bring something new to the table. Anthriel isn't really doing the latter as The Pathway blends elements of traditional and/or neoclassical heavy metal, power metal, and symphonic metal. There's nothing novel about this. However, from the gates, Anthriel delivers a strong performance, equal to their peers, as they integrate those elements.
Indeed the music is rather impressive here. Clever arrangements combined with captivating melodies and sound musicianship mark the entire album. Moments of heaviness are tempered with near feudal folk moments and ambitious soaring piano segues within songs. songs like Mirror Games, Guardian, or Dark Divided Minds march along with generous amounts of musical skill and technical intrigue in their compositions. Sometimes Anthriel can sound like a heavier and forceful Kansas as on Light Divine. Then the closer, Chains of the Past, fits into the epic metal category for the grandeur equal to the story that inspired the album, fantasy author R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms: The Dark Elf Trilogy.
For first album, Anthriel's The Pathway is an ambitious, entertaining, and highly successful project. Fans of progressive power should pick this one up forthwith. Strongly recommended.

New on the Lion Music label is the debut work, Charmed Human Art of Significance (C.H.A.o.S.) from Scandinavian band Mindsplit. The core of the band revolves around guitarist Matthias Holm and vocalist H.B. Anderson who have known each other since the 80's, but have been collaborating more recently since 2003. The lyrical germ of C.H.A.o.S. comes from the fictional ledgers of one Professor Xanadau, supposedly a therapist from the 19th century and a distant relative Anderson. Exploring both mind and memory, C.H.A.o.S., therefore, is somewhat of a concept album.
As a progressive musical work, C.H.A.o.S. is deceptively intriguing. Undercurrents of pure melodic metal, classic rock, and subtle hints of fusion inform the entire work. Through the course of the disc, songs can be heavy invoking the prog metal side as on Battle of the Mind, or more closer to prog rock as on Silhouettes or Visual Minds. Mostly the songs are developed with varying degrees of both motifs, while adding fundamental elements of sensible melody and accessibility as found within The Traveller. Mindsplit even sneaks in some saxophone during a Pink Floyd like segue within A Purpose of Circumstance. Simplicity and quiet majesty inform Through the Eyes of a Child, a song that proves that Anderson is much more than a metal singer. One of the more profound characteristics of C.H.A.o.S. is Mindsplit's lack of dependence on power metal which is so predominant in European prog metal. This thought alone makes C.H.A.o.S. worth more than a simple nod.

Keyboard virtuoso Mistheria returns with an all star cast for the neo-classical progressive metal tour de force “Dragon Fire”. Home to 13 tracks of full on metal pomposity, this is music crafted around stirring vocal melodies and impassioned first class musicianship. The virtuoso meter of the personnel involved sets a new standard and fans of artists such as Symphony X, Malmsteen and Artension will find this a sheer musical delight.
The grandiose music on offer has its home within the classical music masters but the metal charge brings “Dragon Fire” firmly into the present day. Yet this is more than musical virtuosity. Mistheria has taken great care to produce songs first and foremost with catchy vocal melodies and big choruses and just one listen will prove that he has succeeded in his aim producing captivating compositions. After demos for the album had been made the personnel was then hand selected by Mistheria to bring out the best in each track with the highest calibre musicians within the genre chosen to do justice to his songs.
The vocalists comprise of John West (Artension/Royal Hunt), Rob Rock (Impellitteri/Solo), Mark Boals (ex Malmsteen/Ring Of Fire/Royal Hunt), Lance King (Balance Of Power) and Titta Tani (ex Astra / Ashent). Each vocalist’s unique style has been selected for the appropriate track to deliver Mistheria’s vision. The same process was used for the guitarists with George Bellas (solo/Ring Of Fire), Neil Zaza (solo), Roger Staffelbach (Artension/Angel Of Eden) and Emir Hot (solo) plying their virtuoso guitar work which blend beautifully with Mistheria keyboards to recreate the classic guitar/keyboard pairing in all its glory. The bass was ably handled by Alberto Rigoni (Twinspirits) and drums come courtesy of John Macaluso (Ark, TNT, ex Malmsteen) whose performance is full of high-power heavy grooves and tons of energy making this one of his best performances to date.

Acid King — американская группа из Сан-Франциско (Калифорния), играющая музыку в жанре stoner/doom metal. Была основана в 1993 году поющей гитаристкой Лори С. (Lori S., экс-Тhе Bhang Revival, Gross National Product), барабанщиком Джои Осборном (Joey Osbourne) и басистом Петером Лукасом (Peter Lucas).
Возникшая под сильным влиянием традиционного дум металла и психоделического рока, группа развила и придерживается особенного музыкального стиля. Для него характерны замедленный темп, сильно дисторшированные гитары с заниженным звуком в сочетании с «гипнотическим» женским вокалом.
