«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

Recorded over two days in April 1954 with two different groups, Walkin' should not be confused with the Steamin'/Relaxin'/Workin'/Cookin' quartet of albums Miles Davis cut in similar fashion in 1956. In contrast to those contract-fulfilling blowing sessions, the music on Walkin', documenting Davis at one of his early pieces, is much more consistent and remarkably focused—making it one of the best of his '50s Prestige albums. Culled from two previously released 10-inch records (two of the three cuts from Miles Davis Quintet comprise the second half of Walkin', while both of the cuts from Miles Davis All-Star Sextet make up the first half), the lineup differences here aren't particularly dramatic. The core group of Davis, Horace Silver, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke appear on all of the songs but interestingly, both of the saxophonists (Lucky Thompson's tenor on the sextet pieces, David Schildkraut's alto on the quintet pieces) appear with Davis for their first and only time on this record. (J.J. Johnson's trombone completes the sextet.) Accordingly—and unsurprisingly—this is an album where Davis' trumpet is very much front and center throughout. Although solos are distributed here and there (Schildkraut's earthy, full-bodied tone makes his solo on "Love Me or Leave Me" both remarkable and somewhat out-of-sync on what is an otherwise frenetic number), Davis is locked and loaded and in top form on Walkin'. Containing two numbers that would come to be iconic staples of his repertoire over the next decade (the title track, in its proto-hard-bop glory, and "Solar," which aesthetically foreshadowed both his modal jazz and his second great quintet), as well as relatively straightforward takes on standards like "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "Blue 'N' Boogie," Walkin' is both an essential piece of Davis' discography and perhaps one of his most accessible albums.
