Homeplate takes Bonnie Raitt even further down the path toward mainstream production than the unjustly maligned Streetlights, but, ironically, it works better than its predecessor.
Perhaps that's because producer Paul A. Rothchild has helped Raitt craft a record that's unapologetically pitched at the mainstream, where Streetlights often seemed to be torn between two worlds. The great thing about that is, regardless of the production, the essentials of Raitt's music have not changed. It remains a wonderful hybrid of American music, built on a thoroughly impressive set of songs, all delivered with Raitt's warm, expertly shaded, and undeniably sexy singing. She's such an accomplished singer, she sells these songs through productions that are much slicker than those that graced her earlier records, plus with a supporting crew of studio musicians. This production will undoubtedly dismay listeners that just like the earthiness of Give It Up, but Homeplate is still a success because, even though the recording is glossier, Raitt and her music remain the same and, if you're looking for that, it's still irresistible.

Following her first three albums, all of which were wildly eclectic affairs, Bonnie Raitt was poised for a mainstream move, and 1974's Streetlights is it. There's no blues edge here whatsoever, and Raitt's guitar playing is subdued--both detractions--but the album also introduces "Angel from Montgomery," the definitive version of John Prine's piercing ballad. Raitt dips further into contemporary singer-songwriter fare with Joni Mitchell's "That Song About the Midway" and James Taylor's "Rainy Day Man," but the album peaks with Allen Toussaint's thoughtful (and funky) "What Is Success."

This 1972 collection set the bar it took years for Raitt to clear again. Moving easily between sensitive singer-songwriter and bawdy blues-mama roles, the blazing redhead proved she was a talent to watch on several fronts. Raitt demonstrated a keen instinct for finding suitable material, adopting Jackson Browne's "Under the Falling Sky" and Eric Kaz's "Love Has No Pride" as if she'd penned them herself. The honeyed vocals and slashing slide guitar heard on Give It Up identified Raitt instantly to anyone who encountered this album. Unfortunately, it would be nearly two decades before many did catch on to her appeal
