«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

International bestselling band The Buena Vista Social Club introduced Son Cubano, the first Afro-Cuban sound, to music lovers across the globe. However, their record was lucky to have ever come into existence at all. This album (which went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide) was recorded in 1996 at the Egrem studio in Havana and was organised at the very last minute, replacing another session. Initially, the plan was to bring together Cuban and Malian musicians, but it later transpired that the African musicians had not received their visas. The altered project saw Nick Gold, founder of the British label World Circuit, Ry Cooder, the famous American producer and guitarist, and Juan de Marcos González, conductor of the Afro-Cuban All Stars who had just released their first tribute album to the biggest Cuban bands of the 50s, record an album with local musicians⁠—possibly one of the wisest decisions of their career.

Duo Album from Two Jazz Giants!

On "Like a Lover," two of Venus Records' most popular jazz musicians got together for an excellent duo album. New York-based Australian singer/bassist Nicki Parrott and clarinet/tenor sax player Ken Peplowski are chief voices of their craftt. Both musicians bring something new to the music on this album thanks to their inventiveness. It's easy to see that Parrott and Peplowski's characteristics are superbly matched.

The album is a collection of outstanding love songs that consist of mostly standards along with a few Lennon/McCartney tracks. The sound quality is also first-rate. A true audiophile disc!

"Ken Peplowski has long shown interest in a number of different jazz styles, but this CD is his first strictly Gypsy swing session. Recruiting two of the most versatile guitarists for the date, Bucky Pizzarelli and Howard Alden, veterans Frank Tate on bass and Chuck Redd on drums, and the promising young violinist Aaron Weinstein (on selected tracks), Peplowski alternates between tenor sax and clarinet, covering a set list that is mostly drawn from the Quintet of the Hot Club of France and postwar Django Reinhardt records. The reed player showcases both instruments in his delightful take of "Please," overlapping them in spots via overdubbing. Peplowski takes a back seat to the two guitarists in "Nuages," with Pizzarelli taking the opening solo (easily identified by anyone who has heard him play this standard in person) and Alden following the leader's feature. Weinstein takes part in the chugging "Minor Swing," sounding very mature for his tender years. "Anouman" is one of Reinhardt's gems from near the end of his life; surprisingly, it is infrequently performed. Peplowski's lyrical, spacious clarinet is a highlight of this moving rendition. This enjoyable tribute to Django Reinhardt merits a follow-up CD. One minor beef: unless one can read the Japanese-only liner notes, it is nearly impossible to tell which guitarist is soloing on several selections; presumably the duties are shared. "

Ken Peplowski has become a household name in Japan, where Venus Records has released no less than three of his albums in recent years. On this release, the arrangements are varied, so the album doesn't feel monotonous. Peplowski is joined by Ted Rosenthal on piano, Gary Mazzaroppi on bass, and Jeff Brillinger on drums.
Peplowski's tenor sax sounds are warm, attractive, and eloquent, while still rooted in the jazz tradition. His playing is so expressive that it's possible to almost hear the lyrics of each song when he plays the melody.

He was a great actor, but the Ken Peplows Quartet thought Charlie Chaplin made a pretty decent song composer too, making Track 3 on Memories Of You Vol. 2 a rendition of "Smile," of which the lyrics tell the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile.
Chaplin isn't the only musician honored on Vol. 2. George Gershwin, Michel Legrend, Billy Strauhorn, Eubie Blake and Raymond Hubbell are too recognized, hand-picked by the Quartet to pay tribute to in the remainder of the album's tracks.
