«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

Basia Bulat has been a creature of evolution during her career. Her acclaimed 2007 debut, Oh, My Darling, was a bare-bones folkie affair, while 2016's Good Advice—produced by My Morning Jacket leader Jim James—was an experiment in retro blue-eyed soul à la Duffy. On 2022's The Garden, Bulat rewrote her own history, re-recording 16 of her older songs with classical string-quartet arrangements. Lately, though, the Canadian singer-songwriter seems to have settled into a Natalie Merchant-like groove: velvety, but never sleepy, adult contemporary. The Merchant throughline is especially clear on songs like "Spirit" and "Baby," which pops with a hallelujah-choir moment. It also finds songbird Bulat getting playful with pacing and anticipation, as well as accompanied by vibrant strings and autoharp (which originally was her signature instrument but is in short supply on Basia's Palace). She has said that she first tried writing "Baby" years ago but it only clicked once she became a parent, giving her a greater understanding of how hard it is to break ingrained, sometimes inherited patterns. ("Wrong way out of here/ Some roads never end," she sings.) Having a child has also changed the way she writes, as Bulat adopted Leonard Cohen's legendary habit of writing at 4 a.m., before his kids woke. But light-dappled "Disco Polo" is the bright stuff of sunrise—all humming synth, a happy trot and nostalgic childhood memories of listening to music with her parents. There's a twinkling glow to "Daylight," and "My Angel" is the kind of gentle bubble you hear in stylish coffee shops. Bulat sounds Carole King-soulful on piano-driven "Right Now" and Lilith Fair-ready on "Laughter." Her voice takes on an especially rich, deeper than usual quality on "The Moon," a softly shuffling, zephyr-like ballad that finds her shifting pitch while harmonies echo as if in a cavern. And the simple yet dramatic "Curtain Call"—just Bulat and guitar at first—is Cafe Wha?-style classic folk. "I used to be afraid of endings," she sings, determined not to stay still.
