A musical rollercoaster fusing electro-pop, dance and techno, London duo La Roux release their exquisite self-titled debut. Singer/synth player Elly Jackson and co-producer/songwriter Ben Langmaid write honest songs about heartbreak and hope over a backdrop of unpredictable grooves and big-retro vibes. La Roux is the perfect introduction to their talents.

Kicking off with 'In For The Kill', the redheaded Brixton vocalist pulls no punches. A tantalising, catchy avant-garde four minutes, the massive chart topper tells the story of a fragile young woman struggling to reveal her admiration for somebody to a potential loved-one. Opening with a smash-hit tune might seem like a risk to some, but La Roux won't worry because their debut album is littered with potential singles. The upbeat 'Bulletproof' is likely to be a club favourite with its euphoric, bass-heavy groove. Meanwhile, the bouncy, bubbly 'Fascination' harks back to the glory days of 80's superstars Yazoo and Eurythmics. The lively, often frantic, pace of these futuristic floor fillers lets up courtesy of the emotive 'Cover My Eyes' - a powerful and often beautiful ballad aided by note-perfect guest vocals from The London Community Choir. Elsewhere, the stabbing riffs of 'Quicksand' are a notable highlight, and anybody seeking pure-pop perfection should look no further than the monumental 'I'm Not Your Toy'. The mid-tempo dance grooves of 'Colourless Colour' and 'Armour Love' offers further indication that the duo are not restricted to simply writing catchy three-minute wonders, providing much depth and substance. The glorious 'Growing Pains' concludes the album on a high note, delivering a stark reminder of the pains of youth, but with a genuine sense of optimism.

The duo have long been waiting in the shadows, but the pacy beats, high-pitched vocals and snappy ear-candy have been combined to create one of the most eclectic releases in recent memory, debut or not. Despite the brilliance of La Roux, it's staggering to think that there's plenty more to come from the titular twosome. Play.com Review
