With 28 studio albums spanning over 50 years, the Mael brothers have carved out a unique place for themselves in the ocean-wide cosmos of pop. If the sometimes haunting keyboards (“Running Up A Tab At The Hotel For The Fab”), barbed opera-rock accents (“A Little Bit Of Light Banter”) and sonic sophistication remain timeless, the lyrics push forward, ironizing Jansport backpacks (“Jansport Backpack”), tattoos (the harmonious “My Devotion”), beauty standards (“In Daylight”) and influencer vapidity. As they told us just before Mad! hit the airwaves, “our pop has to be provocative, or it can't be.” It’s this unwavering clarity that has kept the duo afloat where others of their generation have faded with time, continuing to create music that invigorates audiences over half a century after their debut.
