MELODIC ENERGY COMISSION is an Vancouver based progressive rock group led by Don XALIMAN. The group was formed in the late 70's and the first iteration of the line-up featured Mark FRANKLIN, Randy RAINE-REUSCH, George MCDONALD, Paul FRANKLIN and Del DETTMAR (of HAWKWIND and SPACE RITUAL). Early years of their career were described as XALIMAN as most typical of a rock band, with very active live performances promoted by cryptic messages a la GONG, with one of the performances also included an opening slot for CAPTAIN BEEFHEART. Their music of that time is also more rooted in rock, inspired somewhat by psychedelic folk and progressive electronic music but more avantgarde and exploratory, with less similarities to the likes of HAWKWIND and more with THE RESIDENTS or CLUSTER.

The group were working on their third album called 'M=E/C2' which ended up shelved after the band went on to a long hiatus. The members stayed in good contact though, and have played a couple of shows in a different formation in the early 2000's, still recording, creating custom instruments and in general keeping their experimental spirit alive. Their subsequent albums though, 'Time Is A Slippery Concept' and 'Wave Packet' can be recommended more to fans of electronic ambient than any space rock, with the latter of the two being described as space jazz.
