ORACLE - AS DARKNESS REIGNS - 1993

И еще одна подзабытая группа из жаркой Флориды,игравшая далеко не death-metal....Образовавшись в самом начале 90-х,под названием Prodigy,группа в короткие сроки приобрела достаточно большую известность,минуя даже,казалось бы неизбежный,для каждой новой группы демо этап..Отличительной особенностью группы стали длинющие композиции по семь,восемь и даже девять минут...и выдержаны они были далеко не в стиле дум метал,а в характерном именно для Флориды павер-трешевом замесе пропитанным какой-то мрачной эпичностью.В 1992-ом,собственными силами,под названием Prodigy в США вышел этот альбом,который был замечен специалистами из Massacre Records.В 1993-ем он был издан в Европе,но уже под новой вывеской-Oracle.Название группы,пришлось срочно менять,по понятным каждому причинам...Возможно всебы сложилось у группы более чем отлично,если бы не Iced Earth..Они сыграли в истории группы двоякую роль.Постоянно дергая к себе то одного,то другого участника проекта они довели группу до развала;с другой стороны об этой группе вспоминают иначинают интересоваться после копания в истории Ледяной Пустоши...Басист James MacDonough (Iced Earth,Megadeth, Nevermore) начинал свою карьеру именно в этой группе...

Oracle is a little-known band that features some previous members of bands like Mystic Force, Iced Earth, and Megadeth. On their one and only release "As Darkness Reigns", they play a dark form of progressive power metal with some crunchy rhythms.

The first thing that struck me about this disc when I put it on is its cold, scooped-out production, sounding a bit similar to "Cowboys From Hell". This band is competant, possesses their own cool style, and plays with plenty of enthusiasm and energy. William Wren (you may know him from Mystic Force) is a talented vocalist whose performance here is peppered with a lot of high screams. The guitar solos here are pretty unique, sounding like neoclassical pieces turned into electric guitar solos . One noteworthy example of this is on the title track, a guitar solo sounding more like Bach than Malmsteen or his imitators. Even though Oracle has two former members of Iced Earth, they sound very little like them. My favorite track on here by far is “Nightmares” because it is the most powerful and has the catchiest vocal melody.

I subtracted some points over a few issues. First of all, let me be clear that I don't believe any album is perfect. I believe there is always room for improvement for musicians to strive for and my rating reflects that belief. At 9 songs, 61 minutes, "As Darkness Reigns" can be quite a chore to make it through. Relatively pleasant overall presentation but not much rhyme or reason to the songwriting or arrangements. Most songs seem overlong. Aside from perhaps the vocalist, there aren’t really a lot of standout performances. Corny lyric alert: “there is a knight in everyone”.

"As Darkness Reigns" would probably appeal to people who are fans of "Cowboys From Hell"-era Pantera, Lethal, "No Exit"-era Fates Warning, or Mystic Force. This is hard to find but if you consider yourself a big fan of the aforementioned groups, it would probably be worth your while to seek out this disc.
