Да.Пожалуй именно так.Такое вступление отражает суть группы,но одновременно и запутывает.

Для меня Ain Soph стали ключиком в огромный мир японского видения арт-рока.В этой группе сплелись между собой джаз-рок,фьюжн,сanterbury и все это до того красиво,так захватывает дух,что невольно начинаешь думать:"Вот где достойно продолжились идеи великих групп 70х".Но копнув поглубже,понимаешь,что корни японского арт-рока располагаются даже где-то в далеких 60х.Но мы снова отходим от сути,ведь Ain Soph,как таковой,появился в 1980 году,однако состав музыкантов собрался еще в конце 70х.
Тут невольно вспоминается вынесенная в эпиграф строчка: «не имеющий подобия ни с кем другим».
В немногочисленных источниках,с которыми я сталкивался,Ain Soph сравнивают и с Camel,и с Soft Machine,и с Mahavishnu Orchestra.Но речь идет не о плагиате,а скорее о "родстве душ" этих команд.Безусловно,музыканты Ain Soph вдохновлялись вышеназванными командами,но это и к лучшему,потому что они вдохновлялись одними из лучших.
Результатом работы музыкантов стало четыре номерных альбома и несколько Live записей.

5 Or 9 (Five Evolved from Nine) is another installment in the re-releases of the Ain Soph discography. The music on this disc is a little less laid back than that on the Marine Menagerie (MM) album.

The Two Orders Of Image is dominated by a blaring type of synth, bringing in sufficient tempo, but failing to create a good atmosphere. The comparison to Koinonia I made for MM holds for this track as well. Fragments From The Pass is a short acoustic guitar bit, friendly enough. This holds for Little Wind too. Ancient Musuem swaps piano, fuzz guitar and some other stuff, each taking the floor for a jazz improvisation. Despite the fact that this formula has been tried out for ages (or at least decades), Ain Soph manage to include at least one very unnatural change of tempo. Still, I would say that the melodic development in the second half of the track has some progressive feel.

And just when I started hoping Ain Soph had at least admitted the cheese from this disc, we get Seascape. Okay, I guess I should have seen it coming with a title like that. This is a highly romantic sounding piece of Richard Clayderman. Ouch! Yuck! And when the cheese is out the wrapper it comes hard and fast, since it is continued into The Valley Of Lutha, with not just piano but assorted strings as well. Even in the guise of piano improvisation, the smell is too strong. Like Ancient Musuem this track suddenly changes into something else somewhere in the middle, without the band finding some sort of bridge. We now get freaky guitarring, quite odd after the opening 6 minutes. I guess somebody gobbled up the last chunk of cheese.

Shadow Picture has some bits of soloing and some melodic bits. It moves more within the regular ranges of jazzrock, making it more palatable to prog fans, without becoming the next best thing. This is yet another track that has a brief silence to see a sudden change of direction. Why didn't they simply make this into a disc with three extra tracks? Stonehenge is another bit of neurotic wiggling, moving dangerously close to the cheese (they found another chunk), failing to do more than nibble it.
Conclusion
This album is less sedate than Marine Menagerie, so there's a plus. And I guess it could be me for a large part, but even in 1993 the stuff displayed on this album was neither original, nor interesting. Ain Soph is seen as a progressive band, but musically there just is no basis for that. I don't mean that as a criticism in itself, more as a classification. Within the musical vein the band chose here, they just aren't that interesting, pretty normal, I would say. Oh, and they really push all the wrong buttons with me. But that could be me. I feel this album is slightly better (slightly less atrocious, really) than Marine Menagerie, but I'm not sure that counts for anything.
