BLACK BONZO - SOUND OF THE APOCALYPSE - 2007

О вечных арт-роковых ценностях, шведы, похоже, осведомлены более прочих. Не случайно подавляющее большинство команд этого скандинавского региона используют в своем инструментальном арсенале аналоговые агрегаты, изобретенные сорок лет тому назад. Black Bonzo как раз из когорты таких вот убежденных ретроградов. Несмотря на сравнительно молодой возраст, в собственном творчестве пятерка музыкантов старается следовать традициям английских ансамблей ранних семидесятых. Чашечки звуковых весов Черного Бонзо сохраняют баланс меж напористым, но в то же время достаточно лиричным хард-роком, характерным для легендарных Uriah Heep, и лихой прогрессивной ритмикой. При этом композиционно-исполнительская подача у ребят отличается предельной самостоятельностью и идейной свежестью, невзирая на внешнюю консервативность саунда. Отрадно, что источниками вдохновения, помимо упомянутых Хипов, здесь выступают не монстры типа YES и Genesis, коим сейчас и так подражают многие, а, скорее, группы прото-артового эшелона (Czar, Cressida, Gracious etc.). Без ненужного выпендрежа шведский квинтет погружает нас в мир, полный теплых тембров и распевного многоголосия (вокалист Магнус Линдгрен - достойный продолжатель дела великого Дэвида Байрона, одни лишь изумительные хоралы в "The Well" чего стоят!). В гармонических гитарных ходах Йоакима Карлссона сквозит увлечение Миком Боксом вперемежку с Брайаном Мэем (Queen). И хотя моментами его шестиструнный друг начинает отчаянно "блюзовать", эти финты воспринимаются очень даже в тему. Никакого самолюбования нет и в помине. Эффектное солирование с целью произвести впечатление на слушателя тут почти сведено к нулю. Все участники коллектива работают практически в унисон, создавая плотный полифонический швал. Окруженный массивными корпусами "Хаммондов", "Роландов", Меллотронов и Мугов, органист Никлас Охлунд великолепно справляется с задачей реализации стены звука, отменно расставляя акценты и задавая необходимый тон всей программе в целом. Отрывистые аккорды его гранд-пиано в интроспективной стадии заглавного тринадцатиминутного эпика удивительно-гипнотическим образом воздействуют на подсознание меломана, подстегивая воображение последнего. Мрачная торжественность красок велеречиво свидетельствует: апокалипсис не за горами. Но мы сами тому виной. И покуда еще не поздно исправить ситуацию. Ведь шанс на спасение есть всегда...
Итог: превосходный альбом, по силе и яркости не уступающий соплеменникам BB - ретро-прогерам Beardfish. Советую приобщиться.

Nothing here you haven't heard before––this Swedish quintet treads paths paved by the likes of Gentle Giant, Genesis and Yes round about the time that Freddie Mercury was strutting the boards with unparalleled flamboyance. But there's a difference between merely treading the path and respecting the earth upon which it was paved and the latter proves something that these cats exceed at, along with aligning themselves with the Good Vibes, radiating positive love junk and all that hippie jazz. The opening "Thorns Upon A Crown" features a retro organ freak out that will have you racing for your ELP and Uriah Heep records faster than you can say Magician's Birthday. The aptly-titled "Giant Games" and "Ageless Door" offer up more of the same, though the latter sees the quintet departing from charted terrain with a boogie so bodacious you have no choice but to feel the breeze of the Allmans at the Fillmore or Deep Purple at its zenith with its arms entwined with Queen. (Also dig the lead guitar work on the penultimate "Iscariot.") The closing epic, titular cut demonstrates that Black Bonzo has done its collective homework and if we're all really good girls and (more likely) boys, the lads from the land of the Midnight Sun will continue to be good to us for a long, long time to come. Believe the hype.

Black Bonzo is not exactly a great name for a metal band and I certainly wouldn't easily pick an album from a band with this name from the shelves in a record store for a listen. It's because of the fact that on the backside the name of record company Laser's Edge is printed, which makes you aware of the fact that the band most probably plays high quality progressive metal music.

The band has arisen from the psychedelic rock group Gypsy Sons Of Magic and has already released a debut album some years ago. I never had the pleasure to have heard this but I understood that the response on it was very positive. In any case the people at Laser's Edge have decided to award this Swedish band with a record deal on the basis of their debut album.

From what I hear on this 'Sound Of The Apocalypse' album, this record deal is absolutely deserved. The band makes very adventurous music, which remains easy to listen to. I myself see it as a very good mix between the seventies progressive rock sound (like a Gentle Giant) and seventies hard rock (like a Uriah Heep). The keyboards of Nicklas Ahlund are very prominently displayed which even intensifies the link to the seventies sound. 'Sound Of The Apocalypse' has eight songs to offer, of which the very long title track and 'The Well' in my opinion are the best. Black Bonzo really showcase their potential with this record and prove that you shouldn't never be frightened by the name of a band. Definitely worth listening to, especially when you favour the seventies period.
