Down to Earth is the debut album by Monie Love, released on October 30, 1990 through Warner Bros. Records. The album found success, peaking at 109 on the Billboard 200 and 26 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and spawned three charting singles. The Flavor Unit is a crew of emcees and DJs from New York City and Northern New Jersey. It is now known as the Unit. The original version of the crew centered around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. It was Mark's connections to Radio personalities Kool DJ Red Alert and DJ Chuck Chillout, who gave the crew quick notoriety. It did not hurt that the original members all had formidable rhyme skills and wrote streetwise lyrics. The 45 King eventually fell into serious drug abuse and Queen Latifah took over the name, and it became her umbrella organization. Flavor Unit Management is run by Latifah, one of the original members of the Flavor Unit, and Shakim Compere. Past management clients were Monica, OutKast, Faith Evans, Total, SWV, Almighty RSO.

Layin' in the Cut is the third studio album by A Lighter Shade of Brown. It was released on July 26, 1994 for Mercury Records and was produced by Jammin' James Carter, DTTX, Robert Gutierrez, Romeo and Stoker. Layin' in the Cut would prove to be the duo's most successful on the Billboard charts, peaking at #54 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #169 on the Billboard 200. Two singles also made it to the charts, "Hey DJ" peaked at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 on the Hot Rap Singles, while "If You Wanna Groove" feat. Aulsondro "Novelist" Hamilton peaked at #45 on the Hot Rap Singles.

It was released in 1992 for Quality Records and featured production from Romeo, DTTX, Stan Jones, Jessie "Toothie" Lars, Jason Roberts and Angelo "Stone" Trotter IV. Hip Hop Locos was not a success, only peaking at #87 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. One single did fairly well, "Homies" made it to #57 on the Billboard Hot 100 an #13 on the Hot Rap Singles.
