This is an outstanding collection of contemporary folk-style art-songs by the late great arpeggio-style finger picking guitarist and songwriter Ron Davies. There are some classic arrangements in this collection that showcase Ron's unique style of guitar and vocal work. For example, the autobiographical ballad "Long Hard Climb" is a streamlined arpeggio style arrangement incorporating jazz-style chording, the use of II-V-I progressions, contrary motion and the generous use of major 7ths, minor 9ths, and diminished chords. The melody is unique with a surprisingly colorful use of the minor V chord that serves as a transitional device throughout the piece. Also included in UFO is the rock classic "It Ain't Easy", "Shadows", and a Brazilian flavored rendition of "Misty Roses" --this latter piece being written by Ron's friend and mentor, the late Tim Harden. ~ Charles Anderson
