Minneapolis' The Litter had a classic '60s garage rock effort with their first album, Distortions, despite it not being acknowledged as such for more than a decade after its release. The follow-up, $100 Fine, features its share of inspired moments as well. Singer Denny Waite is a solid leader, but it's the duo guitars of Zippy Caplan and Dan Rinaldi that add the vibrant colors to the music with some of the era's most underrated tones. "Mindbreaker" is an immediate compact rocker, while Jeff Beck's "Tallyman" works with a near jangle and the sound of electric guitars cruising in and out of the mix. Procol Harum's "Kaleidoscope" adds psychedelic phasing to the entire recording for a classic 1967-1968 timepiece. "(Under The Screaming Double) Eagle" has the hints of hard rock, but without the deafening distortion that would firm up the genre. Extensive bonus tracks help make this a fantastic look at a much-underrated band.
