Gene McDaniels signed to the Liberty label in the late-50's, and scored a series of hits in the US during 1961 and 1962 with the records A 100 lbs Of Clay and Tower of Strength, backed by the The Johnny Mann Singers. Sadly though, Gene fell from favour somewhat, as the public's musical taste veered towards the likes of The Beatles following the British invasion on the US charts in the mid-60's.
However, in the early-70's, he staged something of a resurgence, recording under his birthname, Eugene McDaniels (also known as the Left Rev. Mc D). On Atlantic records he released the critically acclaimed albums Outlaw and Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse. These records have earned him a cult status, particuarly amongst many high profile DJs who have sampled his work in recent years.
McDaniels has also penned many well known songs for other artists, including a No.1 hit with "Feel Like Making Love", performed by Roberta Flack. He is probably best known however, as an esteemed producer of
Soul,
Blues and
Jazz music for many famous artists over the past three decades.
In 2004, he returned to the studio to make his first solo album in almost 30 years, the self-released Screams and Whispers.
