The country music singer-songwriter Hardy loves wordplay and a plot twist. On the easy-jangling "beer," he sets up a bro-to-bro tribute—almost like a wedding toast. "Since the night we met/ We've been thick as thieves … Every buck and bass/ Tractor tire fire/ touchdown pass … All the crazy things we've been through/ In this dry-on-Sunday town." But then the truth is revealed: It's written from the point of view of, yep, beer. It's a trick he pulls again on "JACK," with its narrator making promises like a cartoon devil on the shoulder. "I can fix your problems/ Always got your back/ I can make you famous/ By the way my name is ..." Jack—as in Jack Daniel's. "red," his duet with Morgan Wallen, is an anthemic power ballad that claims "redneck" as a source of pride and small-town authenticity instead of a pejorative—"red" being symbolic of "the sun going down on a John Deere, the color of them jerseys on a Friday night … like a bonehound tracking some white-tail buck down." And while it's employed to evoke patriotism (paying tribute to those who "fight for a wind-torn flag that is blue and white and red"), Hardy is quick to make clear: "I ain't talking politics." His hit duet with Lainey Wilson, "wait in the truck," doesn't mess with metaphor to tell a stark story from each of their characters' perspectives. Against a snakebit, old-school Steve Earle-esque melody, Hardy plays the part of a man picking up a female hitchhiker who's been battered by her partner, and deciding to go shoot that guy dead. Wilson sounds more than a little like Tammy Wynette as she sings: "I don't know if he's an angel/ 'Cause angels don't do what he did." The first half of the album is largely made up of power ballads, including "drink one for me" (narrated by a guy in the afterlife looking down on his earthbound pals: "I hate to tell you/ But they ain't got beer in heaven") and "screen," which celebrates putting down your phone to live life and plays off the homonyms of digital screens and back-porch screens. But there's a major shift that begins with the title track, a quick biography of Hardy growing up in Mississippi and going to Nashville—but refusing to fit the mold; halfway through, it takes on a nu-metal stomp directed at his haters. "You're too loud/ You're too proud/ It won't work/ Well, tell that to 25,000 rednecks/ With my dumb face on their T-shirt." The heavy clomp and hoarse yell continue on "SOLD OUT," "KILL SH!T TIL I DIE" and "RADIO SONG"—a duet with A Day to Remember's Jeremy McKinnon. Melding back-roads sweetness with two-ton fury, it's so jarring it could be a Saturday Night Live sketch. Closer "THE REDNECK SONG" is Hardy clearly having a laugh, but it's equal parts novelty and rallying cry: "I get clear from a still/ I drink beer, eat deer that I kill … My truck nuts stay covered in mud/ I chew tobacco like a cow does cud."
