Reunited in 1990, Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer teamed for a series of concert dates, with the pair drawing on a collection of strong songs from the seventie's as their calling card. _Live in Japan_ captures the long standing Winter and Derringer alliance in concert from Tokyo, along with backing support from drummer Kevin Hupp, Charlie Torres on bass and keyboardist C.P. Roth.
Recorded at MZA Ariake on January 24, 1990, and subsequently mixed in March, Winter and Derringer share the spotlight from the stage as _Live in Japan_ features songs from each talented musicians colorful past. Following a brief introduction, Edgar Winter takes control on "Keep Playin' That Rock 'n' Roll", before lil' Rick assumes command on the sexually charged "Teenage Love Affair".
The hot summer cruisin' "Free Ride" is delivered with a party time vibe, and chased by the mellow "Fly Away" from E.W.'s _White Trash_ days, and Derringer's tight rocker, "Blood From a Stone". The hard edged "Under Cover Man" adds a gritty bend to the performance, while "Jump, Jump, Jump" slows the pace with a cool blues based groove. Winter's sax work accents the song that originally appeared on Derringer's first solo LP, _All American Boy_, from 1973.
The pop hit "Hang On Sloopy", which dates back to Derringer's days with
The McCoys, draws instant audience appeal as R.D. turns back the clock to 1965. It's a return to Edgar Winter turf on the ballsy "Against the Law", which bangs into low-slung axe slingin' action from the diminutive Derringer on "I Play Guitar", and the wild "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo". The inspired thirteen song set is brought to an electric finish with the towering instrumental "Frankenstein" brought to life from the stage.
