«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

From early gig flyers with Black Flag, The Germs, Circle Jerks and the like, you might mistake Los Angeles legends Redd Kross for a hardcore punk band in the classic sense. Hell, even the names of former members—Greg Hetson, Ron Reyes, Dez Cadena and even Dale Crover—read like a who’s who of punk. Despite that pedigree, Redd Kross is primarily punk in spirit, existing at that crucial point in history while staying laser-focused on a version of power pop, mixing in elements of metal, glam, psychedelia and more over their 45-year lifespan.

Redd Kross is and has been an anomaly within their own scene, even creating their classic covers LP Teen Babes from Monsanto to, according to bassist Steven McDonald, "school the hardcore kids on the history of rock 'n' roll." Staying punk with the punks—how’s that for cred? Their original run lasted from 1978 until 1997, and they returned in 2004, releasing a pair of albums that continued their legacy with maturity and a somehow levelled-up approach to songwriting.

Now, five years removed from their stellar Beyond the Door in 2019, which included a Sparks cover and contributions from members of the Melvins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hole, the Muffs and more—comes the band’s self-titled effort for In the Red Records. Despite being labeled as a double-album, the running time clocks in at an old-school 58 minutes across 18 tracks; the supremely sugar-coated single "Candy Coated Catastrophe" is a perfect on-ramp to the rest of the record. From there, Redd Kross lean into well-honed songwriting, sunny production and perfectly executed vocals on tracks like "Born Innocent," "What’s In It For You?" and "Too Good To Be True," the latter of which gets to the heart of exactly what all fans of Redd Kross are searching for and the self-titled LP delivers in perfect pitch: "You are looking for something, and it’s not a kiss/ Exotic, melodic seduction."

As with virtually all of their output, there are a few chinks in the armor, namely length in this playlist era, but nothing to warrant anything less than repeat listens to this monster of powerpop genius once they gets their hooks in. Hopefully this self-titled release kicks Redd Kross into the echelon they deserve—on the mouth and in the first breath of anyone commenting on the most important bands in America.
