«Exclusive for Lossless-Galaxy»

The central attraction of this remastered and enriched version of the Talking Heads' dazzling first album is a previously unreleased 1977 concert at New York City's CBGB, played just as they were about to cut Talking Heads: 77. The band, by then a sharp, tight-knit unit, is audibly confident on their home ice as they rip through a breathless set, heavy on tracks from the soon-to-be recorded debut. Rolling through powerful versions of their first single, "Love Goes to a Building on Fire" and "Uh-Oh, Loves Comes to Town," the band's trademark grooves bounce and crash, highlighting its eternal challenge of recreating that live energy in a studio environment. Their brilliant debut does just that, beautifully capturing Byrne's straining vocals, the odd lyrics, and the sudden rhythm changes—all the things that made them such a new and exotic act in 1977. A previously unreleased "alternate pop version" of "Pulled Up" from the original recording sessions has a fuller sound than the album version and is upbeat and wonderfully alive. A busier, more compact unreleased take of "Psycho Killer" is also revealing, and a rare version of the song, recorded with downtown Manhattan avant-garde cellist Arthur Russell—who nearly joined the band around the time of the debut album—is an even deeper dive into the album's most enduring track. Despite crowded recording sessions at Sundragon Studios in Manhattan, where the band, Tony Bongiovi (owner of The Power Station studios) Lance Quinn, and Tommy Erdeyli (Tommy Ramone) all had a voice, Taking Heads' herky jerky energy was accurately captured in crisp, well-defined sound by engineer Ed Stasium The 2024 remastering of the original album by Ted Jensen is also a success, adding dimension and depth which, to be fair, was never particularly lacking. Punky yet groove-oriented, with African and Caribbean influences, the band's clean-cut art rock remains a singular sound. Slightly mad but hooky and easy to like, Talking Heads: 77 gave New Wave a compelling voice.
