Catawompus - It's Spelled C.A.T.A.W.O.M.P.U.S. (2005)

Catawompus have been on the hump for a few years without really getting off to a flying start so far. The band, founded in Indiana in 1994, which finally moved to the country stronghold of Nashville in 1997, initially rejected several offers from major record companies in order not to have to change their style and finally ended up with their debut "Well It's About Time" in 2001 on the German label Halycon Records. It's Spelled C.A.T.A.W.O.M.P.U.S is the second official album, which mainly contains tracks from their 2003 EP "The Woodpile". On the album, the five Amis play retro rock, that it's a joy.

The repertoire ranges from the relaxed opener Alabama Daredevil to Grateful Dead-like numbers like She's The Kind Of Woman to Broken, which reminds of the Black Crowes. And these are only the first three songs of the album. The fact that there is also a pinch of southern rock here is no longer to be overlooked at the latest in the polyphonic guitar parts. But even quieter tones are struck here and there. With the romantic Hard, the sad Belle Donne and the acoustic number Goodbeys reminiscent of Bon Jovie, three purebred ballads are included on the album. During the first run, the organic production is particularly noticeable. Instead of simply focusing on a fat sound as possible, as is the case with most current releases, Catawompus sound pleasant and intrusive and natural.

This album has the strongest moments when Catawompus just rock free from the liver and fortunately this happens almost throughout the entire album. Anyone who likes good rock music from the 70s or would like a slightly quieter version of the Black Crowes should give this album a chance. Retro can be so much fun.. by Geschrieben von Thorsten
