Having already gathered a solid reputation for their early string of crazed psychotic lounge-garage singles, Gallon Drunk made the plunge into full-album territory excellently with the similarly freaked-out You, the Night...and the Music. Beginning with the appropriately titled instrumental "Rev Up -- TPA," starting with a car doing just that, the four-piece dedicates itself to a mythic zone of Americana gone horrifically wrong, but never forgetting how to swing hips while doing so. The subject matter fits the mood -- thus "Just One More," one of the better drinking songs out there, for all that it sounds like a dipsomaniac's purgatory, or "Night Tide" with its rumbling, echoing rave-up meets film noir feel. There's even a fine re-recording of the band's self-titled song that sounds like it could kill anything looking at it funny, even slightly. For all his protestations at the time, it's pretty clear that James Johnston listened to his Birthday Party albums pretty heavily when coming up with his vocal style, while the rest of the band shows similarly disposed insanity. Still, there are plenty of other elements in the brew -- Suicide's psychotic Elvis, the Cramps' trashabilly sensibility, the Fall's palpable sense of edgy threat, even Einsturzende Neubaten's sheer chaos. The end result is familiar without being exclusively derivative, a fine place for a young band to be. "Some Fool's Mess," released as a single, captures this perfectly, everything from mambo to feedback explosions turning into a dance party from hell, Johnston's gasped lyrics about sex and its messy consequences all the more disturbed. Throughout the album, Max Decharne's drumming is sharp and subtly inventive, balancing out pounding power with slyer touches, while Michael Delanian's general instrumental work fills out the corners all the more impressively. Joe Byfield, meanwhile, concentrates on maracas, and unlike, say, Bez's negligible contributions to Happy Mondays, adds a recognizable, key element to the total atmosphere.

After From the Heart of Town, Gallon Drunk essentially disappeared for some years while working on other projects, including James Johnston's touring work with Nick Cave. In the Long Still Night brought the group back to action in 1996, with a reworked lineup -- Max Decharne left to concentrate on his own work, with Terry Edwards and his wide-ranging abilities now in full participation on organ, trumpet, guitar and more. Ian White took over Decharne's drum spot, Mike Delanian and Joe Byfield kept things going as always, and with other guest help here and there, notably Ian Watson on various instruments, Gallon Drunk kept on keeping on and then some. The band's sound is notably a little crisper and less overtly distorted than before, while Johnston's singing is some of the most clearest he's yet recorded (check out his amazing performance on the anthemic title track, one of the band's best ever songs). It all feels much more confident than before, like the group feels less need to hide behind noise, but without coming across as any less intense. If anything, Edwards' horns take up the slack and punch things up to a higher level, and brilliantly so -- check out the frenetic instrumental "The Big Payoff" -- while slyer numbers like "The Road Ahead" snake along with lower-key but still present threat. "Two Clear Eyes" starts everything off with a fiery roar, with Johnston whipping out a fierce guitar solo to boot, and from there it's another raunchy rampage into dark streets slick with rain and neon lights and even darker pubs slick with sweat and blood. There's a great song about Johnston's girlfriend, "Geraldine," a haunting ballad at once pretty and doom-laden with a strong, heavy-hitting coda, as well as an amazing version of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." Even semi-industrial beats appear on songs like "Up on Fire," but anyone who appreciates Jim "Foetus" Thirwell can hear where he and Gallon Drunk share obvious inspirations.

Один из двух самых красивых, наполненных какой то легкой торжественностью и жизнеутверждающим оптимизмом альбомов. Два на мой взгляд самых красивых альбома Kayak, этот и за 2003г, который к моему счастью пока живой на сайте. А вот Night Vision, уже нерабочий, правда там японский ремастер, а этот голландец. Считаю за честь поддержание в рабочем состоянии этих сокровищ. Такие вещи должны радовать пользователей на нашем сайте вечно.

Storyteller - The Complete Anthology: 1964-1990, often referred to as The Storyteller Anthology or simply Storyteller is a 4-disc compilation released by Rod Stewart in November 1989 (see 1989 in music). It was released by Warner Bros. Records (WEA 9 25987-2) and contains sixty-four tracks. Five of the tracks had never before been released. Storyteller spans the whole of Rod’s career beginning with the 1964 release of “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and ending with “Downtown Train”, a new song for 1989. It was designed for release in the US and contains four discs each covering a different period somewhat chronologically. Disc One spans 1964-1971 and includes “ Can I Get a Witness?” recorded while Rod was with Steampacket and which had never before been released. Disc Two spans 1971-1976. Disc Three spans 1975-1981 and includes “To Love Somebody” featuring Booker T. & the M.G.'s. In the liner notes Rod recalls that this version was recorded shortly before Al Jackson, Jr. was killed. Disc Four spans 1981-1989 and includes never before released versions of “I Don't Want to Talk About It” and “This Old Heart of Mine”. Originally released in an LP-sized box package, it was re-released on November 17, 2009 in a more compact boxed configuration.

Storyteller examines Rod's early career with essential tracks from the Jeff Beck Group, Faces, and his solo work spanning 1964 to 1989.
