As polished and professional as it was, Garbage's third album, Beautiful Garbage, killed whatever momentum the quartet had as the LP commercially crashed and burned not long after its fall 2001 release. Subsequently, the band faded out of view, taking a long hiatus before regrouping in 2004 to record their fourth album, Bleed Like Me, which was finally released in the spring of 2005. Although it was released halfway through the first decade of the 21st century, it belongs to the midpoint of the last decade of the 20th century, sounding like a virtual Cliff Notes of the sounds, themes, and styles of the post-grunge '90s. As they beefed up the guitars, the band have toned down some of the electronica underpinnings that have been present since their debut -- they've not been excised, merely subdued, so this is still recognizably the work of a group that called their second album Version 2.0 with their tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Drummer Patrick Carney recently said the goal for the Black Keys' twelfth album was to have "fucking fun." Sounds like mission accomplished. If you've been waiting for Beck to make a sequel to Midnite Vultures, this might be as close as we get. He's pretty much a third member of the band on Ohio Players—co-writing and/or guesting on eight of the 14 songs. His SoCal sunshine (and backing vocals) can be heard on the relaxed fit of "This Is Nowhere" and freak-show single "Beautiful People (Stay Here)," a co-write with Dan the Automator that borrows the groove of "Feeling That Vibe" by Richard Mead. Beck takes the vocal lead on "Paper Crown," a thick slab of greased-up R&B decorated with deep bass, sassy Hammond, Moog, Vocoder and 808—and that's before Three 6 Mafia's Juicy J rolls in and brings the strut down to a cool, slow roll.

Middle-age looks great on Vampire Weekend. Singer Ezra Koenig has said Only God Was Above Us, their fifth studio album, contains "some of our most ambitious swings ever"—and it's fascinating to hear a band once known for being mannered, maybe even twee, really go for it. "Ice Cream Piano" initially taps into Beatles classicism with a dreamy melody and solemn piano, then kicks into Xanadu madness: shotgun spray drums, peppy keys, strings like a gossamer waterfall, and the gleeful racing rhythm that was a hallmark of VW's early work. "‘Fuck the world,'/ You said it quiet … ," Ezra Koenig sings. "Cynical, you can't deny it/ You don't want to win this war/ 'Cause you don't want the peace." But there is, blissfully, nothing cynical about Only God Was Above Us.
