As a teenager, percussionist and composer Payton MacDonald became fascinated with the tabla, an Indian instrument consisting of two drums, a smaller one with a wooden frame, and a larger one with a metal or ceramic frame. His interest continued through his graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music, and eventually led him to study with tabla master Pandit Sharda Sahai. He has also worked extensively with Canadian tabla player Shawn Mativetsky, who performs six of MacDonald's works on this CD. Three are solos and three are concertos for tabla and percussion quartet. The concertos are placed before the solos, but the listener new to the instrument may want to listen to the solos first to become familiar with the tabla's versatility.

"Slave's Lament" and "Ae Fond Kiss" are both wonderful arrangements of songs by Robert Burns (Dougie's version of Ae Fond Kiss is one of the sweetest love songs you will ever hear).

For the most part, the songs of Tok Tok Tok’s new album are love songs. And the band makes no attempt to hide this. “There can’t be enough love songs,” says singer Tokunbo Akinro confidently. “Love is a universial topic that matters to everyone. It’s something everybody has to deal with. We wanted to tell various stories about what can happen when you’re in love: stories about the nice things and the not so nice things. And sometimes we also get a bit cheeky with our lyrics. It’s still a taboo for women to act on the ‘love market’ the same way men do. Unlike men, women are not allowed to have their flings. So we wrote a couple of provoking songs in which women do what men do. Why shouldn’t they?”

Josie Courreges' background (which includes stints with Horace Heidt, the Lawrence Welk Show, Big Tiny Little and the De Castro Sisters) is not strictly in jazz although she can hold her own on a good swing tune (such as "Don't Get Around Much Anymore"). For this CD the veteran but still youthful singer performs a middle-of-the-road set comprised of standards and show tunes plus two Latin songs. Courreges interprets "Tangerine" with the joy of a Helen O'Connell yet sings Michel Legrand's "On My Way To You" almost as if it were light opera. The backup (which utilizes alternating pianists and an occasional string synth) works well without being distinctive and Carmen Fanzone's warm flugelhorn solos make one wish that he were on more than just a few numbers. Although Courreges is not an improviser, she does justice to each song; none of the composers would be disappointed.

”Who Killed Amanda Palmer” is the first solo album by Amanda Palmer, lead singer, pianist, and lyricist/composer of the "Brechtian punk cabaret" duo The Dresden Dolls.
