Status Quo: 4 Original Albums ● 4CD Box Set Universal Music 2010

Disc 1 1973 Hello!
Hello! is the sixth studio album by the British rock band, Status Quo. Released in September 1973, it was the first of four Quo albums to top the UK Albums Chart, as well as their first album on which all tracks had been written by the group themselves. (Bob Young was not an official member, but the group's roadie and harmonica player, as well as co-writer, primarily with Francis Rossi, of several songs throughout their career). It was also the first Quo album on which drummer John Coghlan was credited with songwriting. Keyboard player Andy Bown and saxophonist Stewart Blandamer both played on "Forty-Five Hundred Times". This was Bown's first appearance on a Status Quo album, although he would guest on most subsequent releases, and become a permanent member of the line-up a few years later. 1973 began for the band in February when their old record company Pye, following the group's success for their new label in 1972, decided to release a single from their 1971 album Dog of Two Head. The single, Rossi and Young's "Mean Girl" reached #20 upon its release. It was backed by the Rossi/Parfitt composition "Everything", taken from the band's 1970 album Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon. In August 1973 the only single from the album, Rossi and Young's "Caroline" was released, reaching #5. This was the group's first single to reach the UK top five. Its B-side was a non-album track called "Joanne", written by Alan Lancaster and Rick Parfitt. The 8-track album was released in September the same year. It became the most successful album the band had ever released. Initial copies of the record on vinyl came with a large black and white poster of the group. Of the 8 tracks on the album, only 6 of them were new. "Caroline" had already been heard by the public due to its single release, whereas "Softer Ride" had served as the b-side to the band's "Paper Plane" single from their previous album Piledriver. No other singles were issued from the album, although a live version of "Roll Over Lay Down" appeared on a three-track EP released in May 1975, which reached No. 9 in the UK Singles Chart.

Disc 2 1975 On The Level
On The Level is the eighth Status Quo studio album. It features Francis Rossi, Richard Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan. The album's cover art features band members in an Ames room, and on the original vinyl release, the inner gatefold sleeve consisted of informal photos members of the group had taken of each other. In November 1974 the band released the only single from the album, an edited version of a Rossi/Young song entitled "Down Down". The single gave the band their only #1 hit to date. Its b-side was the Parfitt/Young album track "Nightride". When the album was released in February 1975, the group were more or less at the peak of their career, record sales-wise. The album entered the chart at #1. All tracks were written or co-written by the group themselves, apart from "Bye Bye Johnny", which was originally a Chuck Berry song.

Piledriver is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Status Quo, released in 1972. It was the first to be produced by the group themselves, and their first on the Vertigo label after their departure from Pye Records. The album's only single, "Paper Plane" (by Francis Rossi and Bob Young), with the b-side "Softer Ride" (written by Rick Parfitt and Alan Lancaster), was to become the first in a sequence of thirty-three Top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart when it peaked at #8 after its release in November 1972. The b-side would later be incorporated into the band's following album, Hello!, released the following year. The album itself was released in December the same year, and reached the highest position of #5 in the UK charts, spending 37 weeks there.

Status Quo: 4 Original Albums ● 4CD Box Set Universal Music 2010

Disc 4 1974 Quo
Quo is the seventh studio album by Status Quo, featuring Francis Rossi, Richard Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan. Like the previous album Hello!, it consisted entirely of songs written or co-written by the group. The only guest musicians featured were Bob Young and Tom Parker, who played harmonica and piano respectively on "Break the Rules". Despite the band believing the album's opening track, "Backwater", was the most suitable candidate for release as a single, the only track to actually be released as a single was "Break the Rules", in April 1974, and it peaked in the UK at #8. The album itself was released in May the same year. Its highest position was #2. In retrospect this album is regarded[who?] as one of their heaviest, possibly due to the influence of bassist Alan Lancaster, who is credited with co-writing six of the eight tracks. The UK LP contained a gatefold insert with a picture of the band playing live on one side, backed with the lyrics on the other.
