Но в это же время они познакомились с гитаристом из Канады Джеми Блеком (Jamie Black), который своей виртуозной игрой смог вселить в них веру в успех. May Blitz is a British heavy rock power trio that was active in the early 1970s. The group was formed in 1969 by bassist Terry Poole and drummer Keith Baker, the rhythm section of the blues-rock trio Bakerloo, both of whom left the group when guitarist Clem Clempson departed to join Colosseum. Jamie Black joined the group on vocals and guitars but both Poole and Baker left this group as well before it recorded anything, Poole joining Vinegar Joe and Baker Uriah Heep.
Black then added fellow Canadian Reid Hudson on bass and Tony Newman, who had played with Jeff Beck, The Hollies and Sounds Incorporated, on drums. After some time playing pubs in the UK, the group signed with Vertigo Records (in the US they were on Paramount Records - not generally known for releasing hard rock) and released their debut album in 1970. A second album followed early in 1971 but the group did not see success quickly and decided to disband late in 1971. Black and Hudson, both originally from Canada, returned to their native country while Newman went on to join Three Man Army. The worldwide rights to both of their albums are now owned by Universal Music Group.

May Blitz was one of the first four bands signed by eminent progressive and heavy rock label, Vertigo, along with future legends Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, and the largely forgotten Juicy Lucy, whose less fortunate fate they would unfortunately share, in the end. Although usually attributed to former Jeff Beck Group drummer Tony Newman (who had played on the all-time classic Beck-Ola), May Blitz was in fact first envisioned in early 1969 by relative unknown James Black (lead vocals and guitar), who along with eventual bassist Reid Hudson was a Canadian, recently relocated to the U.K. in search of fame and fortune. Evidently molded upon the then extremely popular power trio template (established a few years earlier by Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and soon adopted by countless upstarts like Rory Gallagher's Taste, New York's Sir Lord Baltimore, and an early Thin Lizzy, to name but a few), May Blitz worked up their repertoire by playing the U.K. pub and college circuit, before inking their Vertigo deal and getting to work on their eponymous first album. Released in mid-1970, that self-produced platter showcased an interesting selection of proggy acid rock jams, infused with proto-metal guitar histrionics, but wasn't distinctive enough, overall, to separate May Blitz from the hordes of competitors mining similar terrain. (No thanks to its hideous cover art, depicting a poorly rendered caricature of what Mountain's Leslie West might look like in drag!) Sales were similarly disappointing, and so the trio soon returned to the studio - this time with producer John Anthony helping out - and began working on their cleverly titled sophomore opus, The 2nd of May, which emerged barely six months later, in early 1971. Yet, despite adding a few novel elements of folk and space rock, and reigning in some of its predecessor's long-winded flights of fancy, The 2nd of May was nowhere near as compositionally inspired; sporadic bright moments were lost amidst several improvised jams masquerading as proper songs, so that consumers, once again, seemed more interested in satisfying their power trio fix elsewhere. Not ones to delude themselves, either, the members of May Blitz were able to read the tea leaves prophesying their dim future prospects, and mutually decided to go their separate ways later that year. Drum-stool lifer Newman didn't tarry long before trying his luck with another hard rock power trio called Three Man Army (with much the same underwhelming results, unfortunately), while Black and Hudson quietly vanished from historical record altogether, reputedly heading back home to Canada in due time.

May Blitz (alongside Rory Gallagher's Taste) were among the first of the newly formed hard rock power trios to take up the challenge of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience; that is, making the biggest possible noise with the smallest available lineup, but never losing sight of melody and finesse while they did so. Certainly anyone catching their early live show was guaranteed to leave with their ears ringing but their brainbox humming, and the band's debut album was a seamless reiteration of their in-concert impact, all the way down to the extended riffing and miniature solos. May Blitz's strongest point, in terms of audience recognition, was drummer Tony Newman, and fans of the jazz-inflected style that he injected into the Jeff Beck Group certainly won't be disappointed by what they find here -- indeed, with guitarist James Black beside him, it's not difficult to compare May Blitz to the Beck band's Beck-Ola, and find the better-known disc come up wanting every time. The epic "Smoking the Day Away" kicks things off in dynamic form, laying down the grinding, almost proto-metallic assault that was May Blitz's raison d'etre; later in the set, "Dreaming," "Virgin Waters," and "Squeet" all howl with a vengeance that might sound a little old-fashioned today, but was breathtakingly fresh at the time. Even better is "Fire Queen," which essentially blueprints the best parts of every metal act from Judas Priest to the Cult, except it doesn't hang around long enough to spoil the effect. Rather like May Blitz themselves, in fact.

В 1971 году группа May Blitz распадается, но успевает выпустить второй диск, получивший название "The 2nd of May" - 1971. Великолепный по содержанию альбом, в отличие от дебютного, заметно менее слажен - композиции сыграны в том же стиле (Hard/Blues/Prog Rock), но нет той целостности, что была на пластинке, которая была выпущена годом ранее (1971). The second and final May Blitz album basically picked up where its predecessor left off, with the thunderous and foreboding "For Mad Men Only," and then bludgeoned on from there. Except, where May Blitz concentrated on weight, 2nd of May is more interested in mood and even mirth - "25th of December 1969" would be almost jovial, if the lyrics weren't so harsh, while the balladic "Just Thinking" closes the album with the sweetest of whispers. It's a tighter disc than its predecessor. Just two of the eight songs really top five minutes, as the band learned how to cram maximum impact into minimal space, and layered the virtuosity on from there. The helter-skelter blur of "Eight Mad Grim Nits" is as electrifying a guitar workout as you're likely to hear, with the axe panning wildly while the rhythm section soars like a steeplechase behind it; while "High Beech" takes the opposite tack entirely, a psychedelic dream that builds so gently that the effect is almost boleric. "Honey Coloured Time," too, has a gentle mood that puts one in mind of labelmates Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan," as performed by the Full House era Fairport Convention. And, while a lengthy Tony Newman drum solo doesn't really repay repeat listens (well, not unless you like drum solos), still 2nd of May remains one of those albums that you will find yourself returning to again and again, while wishing May Blitz had held on long enough to cut a follow-up.
