Japan Original Album Classics - 2011 issue UK 3-CD set (released as part of the 'Original Album Classic' series) comprising the albums 'Adolescent Sex', 'Obscure Alternatives' & 'Quiet Life'; each CD is presented in a mini LP-style card sleeve, and come housed in a thick card picture slipcase. discogs.comFormed in London, England in early 1974, Japan comprised David Sylvian (vocals), his brother Steve Jansen (drums), Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Mick Karn (saxophone/bass). A guitarist, Rob Dean, was added to the line-up when the band won a recording contract with the German record company Ariola-Hansa. Eminently unfashionable in the UK punk era, they first found success in Japan. After three albums with Ariola-Hansa, they switched to Virgin Records in 1980 and found their fortunes dramatically improving thanks to the surge of popularity in the New Romantic movement. Japan's androgynous image made them suddenly fashionable and they registered several UK Top 20 singles. Their albums Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) and Tin Drum (1981) were also well received. Disagreements between Karn and Sylvian undermined the band's progress just as they were achieving some long-overdue success, and they split in late 1982.The members diversified into collaborative work and solo careers, reuniting (minus Dean) in 1991 for a project under the moniker of Rain Tree Crow.en.wikipedia.orgJapan were a British New Wave group, formed in 1974 in Catford, South London. The band achieved success in the late 1970s/early 1980s, when they were often associated with the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement (though the band themselves have downplayed any such connection). The band, whose members were David Sylvian, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, bassist Mick Karn, Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen as drummer and a later addition to the band with guitarist Rob Dean, began as a group of friends, who all studied at the same school (apart from Dean). As youngsters they played music as a means of escape, playing Sylvian's two-chord numbers - sometimes with Karn as the front man, sometimes with Sylvian at the fore. They christened themselves Japan in 1974, signed a recording contract with German disco label Hansa, and became an alternative glam rock outfit in the mould of David Bowie, T.Rex, and The New York Dolls.Allmusic.com / Biography by Jason AnkenyJapan's evolution from rather humble glam rock beginnings into stylish synth pop (and beyond) made the British group one of the more intriguing and successful artists of their era. Formed in London in 1974, Japan began its existence as a quintet comprised of singer/songwriter David Sylvian, bassist Mick Karn, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, drummer (and Sylvian's brother) Steve Jansen and guitarist Rob Dean. In their primary incarnation, the group emulated the sound and image of glam rockers like David Bowie and the New York Dolls; Sylvian's over-the-top vocals, much in the vein of Bryan Ferry, also earned Japan frequent (if derisive) comparisons to Roxy Music. After winning a label-sponsored talent contest, they were signed to Germany's Ariola-Hansa Records in 1977 and debuted a year later with a pair of LPs, Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives, which received little notice at home or in the U.S. but did find favor among Japanese audiences. With 1979's Quiet Life, Japan made a tremendous leap into more sophisticated stylistic and subtle territory; a subsequent hit single covering Smokey Robinson's "I Second That Emotion" further underscored the newfound soulfulness of their music. 1980s Gentlemen Take Polaroids continued to broaden Japan's scope, incorporating a variety of exotic influences into their increasingly atmospheric sound. With 1981's Tin Drum (recorded minus Dean), the band peaked: tapping sources as diverse as funk and Middle Eastern rhythms, the album moved beyond pop confines into experimental tones and textures, and scored a U.K. smash with the single "Ghosts." However, Tin Drum also proved to be Japan's swan song: long-simmering differences among the bandmembers came to a head when Karn's girlfriend moved in with Sylvian, and the group disbanded in 1982. The individual members quickly forged ahead with their projects: Sylvian began a successful solo career and also entered into a series of collaborations with performers like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Holger Czukay and Robert Fripp, while Karn issued a 1982 solo LP, Titles, before founding the short-lived duo Dali's Car with Bauhaus' Peter Murphy. In 1986, meanwhile, Jansen and Barbieri issued Worlds in a Small Room under their own names before recording together as the Dolphin Brothers. In 1987, Karn released Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters, a solo LP which featured contributions from Sylvian and Jansen, spurring rumors of a reunion which came to fruition in 1989 when the four principal members re-teamed under the name Rain Tree Crow. By the time an eponymously-titled album appeared in 1991, however, relations had again dissolved in acrimony, and the musicians went their separate ways; while Sylvian continued working independently, as the decade wore on Karn, Jansen and Barbieri occasionally reunited in various projects while also maintaining solo careers. ru.wikipedia.orgJapan - британская музыкальная группа новой волны, образовавшаяся в 1974 году в Люишеме, юго-восточном пригороде Лондона. Наивысшего результата в UK Singles Chart группа добивалась с «Ghosts» (#5, 1982) и «I Second This Emotion» (#9, 1982). Rip by ALLexxess

Originally released in 1978
℗ & © 2004 BMG UK & Ireland Ltd. Original Vinyl Copies released in the UK and Europe included either a 2 sided lyric sheet or an inner sleeve with the lyrics in the same font as the back sleeve. There were two releases in the UK which both used the same Catalogue Number: AHAL 8004. One was manufactured in the UK with Ariola Hansa 'Rainbow' labels and was pressed on thick vinyl. The other in Germany which had 'Black/ Silver' labels which was pressed using thinner quality vinyl. Furthermore the Sleeve used for those produced in Germany appear to have taken the German 'Hansa International' Sleeve with the German Catalogue Number removed and replaced with the UK number, AHAL 8004. en.wikipedia.orgAdolescent Sex was the first album from the British glam rock/new romantic group Japan, released in 1978. To avoid controversy over the title, the album was renamed Japan in some countries. Though not a commercial success in their native UK, the album was better received in Japan where it peaked at #20, and in the Netherlands where the single "Adolescent Sex" reached number 27 in the Dutch Top 40 in 1979. The Japanese release contained several mistranslations of song titles. "Transmission" became "Invitation to Fascination", "Suburban Love" became "Carousel of Love", and "Television" became "Temptation Screen". The album was remastered and re-released as a digipak CD on 18 April 2004, with four videos as bonus material.Allmusic.com / Review by Amy HansonAlthough Japan later became one of new romantics' poster children, their 1978 Adolescent Sex LP predated the movement by two years. A remarkable debut, the set snarls with leftover punk intent, a few glam rock riffs, and a wealth of electronics that not only reach back to the band's youth, but also predate much of what would explode out of the next wave of British underground. Sounding absolutely nothing like MTV's mainstream Japan, the quintet snarls across the opener "Transmission," all snotty lads and frazzled hair, setting the stage for what follows. Except, rather than toeing that line, the band pull some remarkable tricks out of their admittedly tight sleeves. The "wow factor" of an incredibly funky bass and guitar on "The Unconventional," repeated again on "Wish You Were Black," is not only a surprise but leaves one wondering if the band were closet Chic fans - especially in light of the seven-minute jam "Suburban Love" that follows a little later on. Elsewhere, though, the band play closer to their roots while defining their own style, which includes David Sylvian's wonderfully sexy, tousled vocals - most notably on the epic, and sexy, post-punker "Television" and a cover of the vintage showstopper "Don't Rain on My Parade." A more exciting album than just about anything else they'd ever record, Japan were young, hungry, and more than a little rough around the edges. Despite the slick R&B work twined in, it's important to remember that this band were in the sonic foothold of an early edgy era - groundbreakers at their own inception. The sound, that look - it fit them well. Covers Box

1978 Obscure Alternatives
Ariola Hansa / Pye Records AHALH 8007
Originally released in 1978
℗ & © 2004 BMG UK & Ireland Ltd. Original Vinyl Copies released in the UK and Europe included an inner sleeve showing the group recording the LP. Initially there were two releases in the UK which both used the same Catalogue Number: AHALH 8007. One was manufactured in the UK with Ariola Hansa 'Rainbow' labels and was pressed on thick vinyl by Pye Records. The other in Germany which had 'Black/ Silver' labels which was pressed using thinner quality vinyl. Furthermore those produced in Germany used a slightly different Ariola Hansa Logo on the back of the sleeve. There is a third variation which was manufactured around 1981/ 1982 whereby a small red triangle with "Made in '33' Germany" was printed at the botton of the vinyl label. en.wikipedia.orgObscure Alternatives is a 1978 album by Japan, the follow-up to their debut Adolescent Sex. Lead singer David Sylvian has gone on record saying that this should have been their debut album. The final track, "The Tenant", a piano based instrumental, was the first notable shift towards the direction their later material would take.Allmusic.com / Review by Amy HansonTheir second album to hit the shelves in 1978, Japan's sophomore effort, Obscure Alternatives, found the band dropping most of their debut's funk fringe in favor of guitar-oriented fuzz and quirk - scooping up the glitter left behind by all the scene's other nascent Siouxies and Adam Ants. Although the set isn't quite up to par with its predecessor, Obscure Alternatives is still a challenging listen. David Sylvian is snotty, snotty on "Automatic Gun" - a spit-shined punk shocker backed by bright pop guitar - and ironically playing into all the guises they eschewed. Both the wonderfully atmospheric and slightly menacing title track and "Love Is Infectious" put the band completely into discordant post-punk art house-dom, the latter including a twisted piano solo in the middle of the guitar crunch. "....Rhodesia," on the other hand, brought the funk back and infused it with a Caribbean essence. While there is no doubt that Obscure Alternatives paled in the shadow of Adolescent Sex, Japan had obviously, in their eyes, broken through to find their style, their groove. Still eons away musically from their more commercial Tin Drum heyday, the band were nevertheless cultivating a breathtaking crop of kernels. 228MB (1 Part) + 213MB (1 Part)01 Automatic Gun

UK Edition released in January 1980 due to a delay in manufacturing the album. en.wikipedia.orgQuiet Life is the third album by the British band Japan, released firstly in Japan, Germany, Canada and other countries in December 1979, then in the UK in January 1980 (due to a delay in manufacturing the album). Musically, the album was a huge departure for the band as their previous two albums had been more in the vein of alternative glam rock, as opposed to the New Wave leanings exhibited on this album. Quiet Life was the last of three albums the band made for the Hansa-Ariola label (they switched to Virgin Records later in 1980), though Hansa would later issue a compilation album (Assemblage) that consisted of highlights from the band's tenure on the label. The album is also notable for being the first album where singer David Sylvian used his newfound baritone vocal style, which later became one of the band's most distinctive hallmarks. Though initially unsuccessful upon its release in the band's native UK (where it peaked at #72 in February 1980), the album returned to the charts in early 1982 after the commercial success of 1981's Tin Drum and the Hansa Records compilation Assemblage. It then peaked at #53, two years after its original release, and was eventually certified "Gold" by the BPI in 1984 for 100,000 copies sold. Also initially unsuccessful, the title track and lead single "Quiet Life" would later be re-released and make the UK top 20 in 1981. Three other prominent tracks were also recorded and released by the band during this era and would later be re-released and become UK top 40 hits for the band in 1982, but were not included on the album ("Life In Tokyo", "European Son", and a cover of the Motown hit "I Second That Emotion" which would make the UK Top 10). The album appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.Allmusic.com / Review by Keith FarleyQuiet Life is the album that transformed Japan from past-tense glam rockers into futuristic synth popsters, though they'd been leaning in that direction for a while. It's also a solid proto-New Romantic synthesizer record, enhanced by Mick Karn's superb fretless bass work and David Sylvian's smooth, sneering vocals spread over pop hits like the title track and "Fall in Love with Me." 209MB (1 Part) + 204MB (1 Part)01 Quiet Life
