Part of a five-album Iron Butterfly SHM-CD Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) reissue series featuring the albums "Heavy," "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," "Ball," "Iron Butterfly Live," and "Matamorphosis". ru.wikipedia.orgIron Butterfly - американская рок-группа, образовавшаяся в 1966 году в Сан-Диего, Калифорния и исполнявшая тяжёлый эйсид-рок с элементами прогрессивного рока. Пока группа гастролировала (попеременно с The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Traffic, The Who, Cream) альбом оставался в «Биллборд»-чартах в течение года. 17-минутный In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, заглавный трек второго альбома, стал международным мега-хитом. Принято считать, что Ингл создал эту вещь в таком состоянии, что даже не смог правильно написать название In The Garden Of Eden. Allmusic / Biography by Steve HueyThe heavy, psychedelic acid rock of Iron Butterfly may seem dated to some today, but the group was one of the first hard rock bands to receive extensive radio airplay, and their best-known song, the 17-minute epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," established that more extended compositions were viable entries in the radio marketplace, paving the way for progressive AOR. The track was written by vocalist, organist, and bandleader Doug Ingle, who formed the first incarnation of Iron Butterfly in 1966 in San Diego with drummer Ron Bushy. After the group moved to Los Angeles and played the club scene, it secured a recording contract and got national exposure through tours with the Doors and Jefferson Airplane. Following the release of their 1968 debut album, Heavy, original members Jerry Penrod (bass), Darryl DeLoach (vocals), and Danny Weis (guitar) left the band and were replaced by guitarist Erik Braunn and bassist Lee Dorman. Weis went on to join Rhinoceros. The new lineup recorded In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida later that year, which sold four million copies and spent over a year in the Top Ten. (The title has been translated as "in the garden of Eden" or "in the garden of life.") A shortened version of the title track, which contained extended instrumental passages with loud guitars and classical/Eastern-influenced organ, plus a two-and-a-half-minute drum solo, reached number 30 on the singles charts. The follow-up, Ball, showed greater musical variety and went gold, but it also marked the beginning of the band's decline. Braunn left the group and was replaced by guitarists Mike Pinera and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt, but the group's success was largely over. Iron Butterfly broke up in 1971; Braunn and Bushy re-formed the group in the mid-'70s without success. Rip by ALLexxess
1968 Heavy en.wikipedia.orgHeavy is the debut studio album by the rock band Iron Butterfly, released in early 1968. Most of the songs are strikingly simple, based on two or three riffs. The lyrics are also simple; with the exceptions of "Unconscious Power" and "Gentle as it May Seem", each song has but a single verse of eight lines or less, repeated in whole or in part as needed. The first two tracks, "Possession" and "Unconscious Power", were released as the respective sides of a single. The album's artwork depicts the band members playing their respective instruments beside a large monument of a human ear. Three of the group's members (Jerry Penrod, Darryl DeLoach and Danny Weis) left the band shortly after the album was recorded, leaving Ingle and Bushy to find replacements. Despite being a debut album with no hit single to provide an entry point for the casual listener, Heavy was a commercial success, reaching #78 on the Billboard Charts and eventually going Gold in the US. Contrary to rumor, tambourine player Darryl DeLoach contributed lead vocals to only a few songs on Heavy. As with all of Iron Butterfly's albums prior to Scorching Beauty, most of the lead vocals are by Doug Ingle.Allmusic / Review by Stephen Thomas ErlewineIron Butterfly's 1968 debut album, Heavy, established the band's trademark sound, relying on plodding, heavy guitar riffs and thundering drums. Most of the album was not particularly well written - the riffs were the songs, not their foundation - but the band's overwhelmingly loud sonic attack occasionally made up for the weakness in the material. 1968 In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida en.wikipedia.orgIn-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is the second studio album by the American rock band Iron Butterfly, released in 1968. It is most known for the title track, a simple composition which, due to an extended jam, occupies the whole of Side B. The album is also available in a deluxe edition CD. The In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida LP peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts and was given the distinction of being the first album to be awarded platinum status when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) began that achievement level in 1976. Today it is a multi-platinum album with sales of over 25 million copies. It was also Atlantic Records' biggest selling album until it was surpassed by Led Zeppelin IV.Allmusic / Review by Stephen Thomas ErlewineWith its endless, droning minor-key riff and mumbled vocals, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is arguably the most notorious song of the acid rock era. According to legend, the group was so stoned when they recorded the track that they could neither pronounce the title "In the Garden of Eden" or end the track, so it rambles on for a full 17 minutes, which to some listeners sounds like eternity. But that's the essence of its appeal - it's the epitome of heavy psychedelic excess, encapsulating the most indulgent tendencies of the era. Iron Butterfly never matched the warped excesses of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," either on their debut album of the same name or the rest of their catalog, yet they occasionally made some enjoyable fuzz guitar-driven psychedelia that works as a period piece. The five tracks that share space with their magnum opus on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida qualify as good artifacts, and the entire record still stands as the group's definitive album, especially since this is the only place the full-length title track is available. 1969 Ball en.wikipedia.orgBall is the third studio album by the rock band Iron Butterfly, released in February 1969. After the enormous success of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", Iron Butterfly modified its acid-rock sound somewhat and experimented with more melodic compositions. The band's trademark heavy guitars, however, are still evident on such tracks as "In the Time of Our Lives" and "It Must Be Love". The album reached #3 in the charts, making Ball more immediately successful than In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Ball was certified Gold by 1969. It also spawned two minor hit singles: "Soul Experience", an uncharacteristically uplifting song for the group, went to #75 on the Billboard charts, and despite its nightmarish musical tones and morbid lyrics, "In the Time of Our Lives" managed to reach #96. In 1999, Collector's Choice Music released Ball with two bonus tracks, "I Can't Help But Deceive You Little Girl" and "To Be Alone", which previously were available only on a 7" single.Allmusic / Review by Stephen Thomas ErlewineFollowing the huge success of their second record, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Iron Butterfly scored a second straight Top Five album with Ball. While it didn't have any acid rock freak-out to compare with the epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," Ball was a more ambitious album, as the group experimented with shorter, more melodic songs. Like any Iron Butterfly album, the quality of the material is wildly inconsistent, yet cut for cut, Ball is a more consistent album than their two previous records, as the group trimmed away some of the acid rock excesses of their earlier records while retaining their brutally loud trademark heavy guitars. 1970 Metamorphosis / Iron Butterfly With Mike Pinera And El Rhino en.wikipedia.orgMetamorphosis is the fourth studio album by Iron Butterfly, released in 1970. Though it was not as successful as its predecessor Ball (1969), it reached #16 on the US charts. The album was recorded as a trio; Erik Brann, who left because of band disputes, was replaced by four session guitarists. Two of them, Mike Pinera and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (called El Rhino on the sleeve), would become members of Iron Butterfly shortly after the album's release. Officially, the album is credited not to Iron Butterfly, but to "Iron Butterfly With Pinera & Rhino", in reference to the two aforementioned guitarists. The album spawned the single "Easy Rider (Let the Wind Pay the Way)," which reached #66 on the Billboard chart, making it the band's biggest hit aside from "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". The album is noted for having one of the earliest uses of the Talk box on a rock album.Allmusic / Review by Stephen Thomas ErlewineOn Ball, Iron Butterfly began to expand its sound, attempting to write more concisely. On Metamorphosis, the group continued its musical explorations, adding a layered production to its sound. This ambition, highlighted by a handful of strong tracks, particularly the single "Easy Rider (Let the Wind Pay the Way)," makes for an interesting listen, since Iron Butterfly's albums can be weighed down by their relentless heaviness.
